Can you get a site listed in more than one relevant category. I have seen some sites listed in at least five categories, although all were still relevant to what the website was about. So my question is, if you already have a site listed in one category, can you still apply to other categories which are relevant to your website.

No, the problem is that a lot of webmasters would then convince themselves that every page of their site would deserve a listing - each in a different category :( .

You must select the single best topical category that your website fits in to. If the site covers several related topics it may fit in a main category under which the sub-topics occupy sub-categories of their own. Where the site covers topics unrelated in the directory structure (eg dance and costume) we ask the webmaster to decide which is the best topic to suggest to.

When the editor reviews the site, if they see that it might also be suitable for another category, then they will suggest it to that category. (There have been cases where the site has been suggested to a category and been found wanting, but the editor has suggested part of the site to another category and been listed.)

The one exception is that if you have a bricks and mortar address (ie a physical location that people might visit) then you may also submit your site to that locations category in Regional.

So the rule is 1 in topic and 1 in regional and let the editors decide if it deserves more.

Have a look at our FAQ for more information.

Sites in multiple languages (not machine translated) may get the same service for each language,

I once considered having multiple languages available, and this came to mind: "machine translated" due to so many users on my site being multinational. Some sort of translation system would have to be put into place.

A "Gentile English" speaking person versus a Gallic English speaking person.
A Cuban Spanish speaking versus Mexican Spanish speaking.

There are too many different variations in the world of languages.

What is your suggestion on this matter?

The ODP rule is simple--machine translations are not listed separately.

If you are thinking about the number of ODP listings you could get (more realistically, apply for), then you are not thinking about serving your customers. Some ODP advice: The best way to get a favorable review from the editors is not to treat us as an enemy "target" or a contemptible "useful tool," but to give us, with all your other visitors, the same human dignity that you'd wish for yourself.

Well, you know the ODP rule. But what does that have to do with your site? Do you want a convenient and cheap (but very ludicrously bad) translation into one or more languages? Do you think it would be worth it for foreign visitors to be able to get a convenient but vague idea of what the site is about (with some eyestrain and some chucking)?

We can't make that call for you. It's your call. Before you decide, pick one of your competitors who has content in something other than YOUR native language. Translate it to your language, and consider.

I asked because I thought it was relivent, to OPD Listings. I choose not to convert, or use a machine translated engine.

I have seen translation engines and they still have a long way to come before I make use of them.

As far as OPD I think, that you do a good job on most of the sites.

Sites in the native language seem to do better then translated sites.

pvgool, I was not asking any one what they think I should do, just what there thoughts were on the matter. I am not looking for a fight.

In General I do not look at the OPD with contempt or an enemy

There are engines availble like Babel Fish, and google has one as well.

Most people could just put a link on there site to one of these and let some one pick.

Having your site listed in the OPD directory is a plus, it just seems like too much work to translate a site, unless the market really called for it and the pages were static, and not subject to continous changes.

Shouldn't that be chuckling? Well, perhaps not.... :D

If you want to use your site to promote anything, that's your free choice. If you want to provide information yourself -- that is great, our work wouldn't be possible without SOMEONE doing that. If you want to help people find information provided by OTHER people, fine: that is a goal we share, and can work together on. (But the submittal policies are very clear on what you can do to help: if you're stepping beyond the submittal policies, you'd better be VERY sure you have set aside your personal self-promotional purposes, and are focused on a kind of help that you'd be doing even more avidly for your competitors than you'd do for your own publications.)

Or else, you must recognize that you have by your actions sent the message that you've stopped thinking about how you can help ODP editors and other surfers, and started thinking about how you can subvert their work to use it for your own self-promotional purposes. And those actions communicate a kind of contempt that no amount of smarmy self-justification (or any other kind of language) can cover up.
