I have been submitting our site http://www.dallascontracting.com every three months for the last year and a half without success. I am trying to get it listed in Top: Business: Construction and Maintenance: Commercial Contractors: Demolition . I feel our site is organized well, looks good and offers unique content that the others dont. The site is highly ranked on other search engines for keyword "demolition contractor" which makes me believe they feel our site is relavant and has unique content. Can someone provide any assistance or suggestions.

Yes, stop submitting it.

Each time you do, your previous submission is overwritten. If the editor sorts the pile by submission date, your actions keep pushing it down to the bottom of the his/her pile.

  1. Read the Site Suggestion Instructions again.
  2. Read the Posting Guidelines for these forums.
  3. Use the forums to properly format a request for a status check.
  4. DO NOT RESUBMIT ANYMORE UNLESS SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED BY AN EDITOR IN THIS FORUM.

By violating the most basic rule when submitting (Submit URL Instructions: "Please only submit a URL to the Open Directory once. Again, multiple submissions of the same or related sites may result in the exclusion and/or deletion of those and all affiliated sites.") you are fighting with yourself. Each time you re-suggest your site, it causes the old suggestion to be overwritten and often leaves duplicates for editors to try and weed out in order to leave the most recent suggestion. The only thing that you accomplish when resubmitting over and over again is a delay in the review time of the site.

*added: Simultaneous post-Jim types faster (at least we are on the same page :) )

I only registered once and I’m not still not registered with dmoz

I'm having the same problem with my business’s website, We Are MultiMedia, http://www.wamm.ca. However, I have not resubmitted -- I only submitted my site once and I'm still not in the directory.

I feel the same as you do, our site is well organized, looks good, and offers distinctive content that the others don't. The site is highly ranked on other search engines for keyword "design agency" or "multimedia" or "graphic design" which makes us think that the search engines consider our site is relevant and useful but www.wamm.ca is still not registered with dmoz.

Can someone provide any assistance or suggestions?

Suzanne,

Your best bet would be to go to the "Submission Status" forum, read the "read before posting' link to find the information that is needed, and enquire as to the status of your submission.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I did that today and hopefully I will find out why. I am a very busy business owner so registering, applying, learning new message boards etc is very time consuming so as a small business owner I find this process frustrating and unfortunately, every search engine has its own rules and ways of doing things. The reading alone is hugely time consuming. If I had had more capital, I would have hired a professional to summit my url because of the technical complications and amount of information that has to be digested. Truthfully, it is a lot of extra work and small businesses don’t have the recourses that larger businesses do.

That's fine - no one is forccing you to submit - submission is a voluntary act on your part. Editing is a voluntary act on our part.

There is no point going to all the extra work, cause if you can't find the time to submit, and find it frustrating to do so, you may be disappointed when you find an editor has not found the time to review your site. Even if your site is reviewed and accepted, you may also be disappointed to find it really makes no difference to your life.

It can be frustrating for those who suggest a site to ODP when it is their own site and believe it will financially benefit them to be listed. Although there are many thousands of editors volunteering their time, and because of human engagement, it can still take years to review any one site (or 10 minutes). Also keep in mind that the goals of a webmaster or business owner are far removed from the goals of the ODP. ODP is like no other directory in the world, using humans to build the directory, and for that reason, many search engines find value. It’s a 2 edge sword in a way.

Word of advice and/or warning to you and others: Professionals often do a very poor job of suggesting URLs to the ODP. Which is unfortunate - if they took the time to find the right category and to follow the guidelines for describing sites, they'd be a great resource both for webmasters and us; as it is, more often than not, webmasters waste their money and we get a lot of extra work because some negligent SEO pro has dumped 514 sites of his clients in Sports/Waterfowl_Wrestling even though none of them is a sports site.

This is, of course, not true of all directory submitter professionals
. Recently I found a score of suggested sites in a small World category, all of which I could list very quickly, less than a day after they were all suggested. And that's great for all parties concerned. But in my personal experience, that is the exception rather than the rule.
