Having a major problem getting listed

Hello,

I am a web developer for a company that is listed in the top 300 internet sites. We have submitted our URL 4 times in the last three years, about every 9 months and still are not listed. We comply with all of the guidelines and still can't get listed. The category is “Shopping: Home and Garden: Windows: Window Coverings: Blinds". I am getting the feeling our competition is an editor.

Please help resolve this problem.

You can read more about listings by clicking on the FAQ at the top of the page.
It would take more than just a hunch but you can file a report at http://report-abuse.dmoz.org/ .

Please do not keep resubmitting the site. It only hurts your chances if the editor revewing sites lists them in order of date submitted. Each time you submit to the same category it replaces the previous and would put it back down at the bottom of the pile. :)

Any of around 250 editors could process your listing suggestions. Be aware that emailing one of them is unlikely to either expedite a listing or elicit a response. Emailing more than one of them would be spamming.

Please, just be patient. As our FAQ says, we'll get around to it in time but we can't predict when that might be.

I can confidently say that "the editor" is not a competitor.

Other people's lists of top sites shouldn't influence ODP editor listing decisions.

The most likely possibility is that, so far, editors have found other things to do that had a higher priority than reviewing all the suggested sites in that category. This isn't a problem: it's a design feature -- a democracy of the web, in which everyone's vote is measured by the work they have done, and the respect it has earned.

Is it normal for 10 months to go by and never get a response? Is there anything that can be done? --edit--

I am very impressed with the quick response in the forum, just wish the listing added would be as swift.

Thanks again,

You might like to read step one of our submission guidelines which forbids the submission of related websites and lays out the sanctions which can be applied should that stricture be declined.

Part of the listing suggestion process is to acknowledge that one has read and agreed them.

Jimnoble,

I am sorry about the comment, it was meant as a joke and I understand it was inappropriate and will and remove it.

I followed your advice and read step one again and we have always complied with everything.

Is there anything else that can be done to ensure we are listed this year?

It's kind of like yelling bomb in an airport with a smile on your face.

The short answer is No. During the submission process you can help by suggesting to the correct category, only suggesting one time, and writing good titles and descriptions. Once you have suggested your site that is all you can do. Nothing further can be done to expedite the review.

If I might add to the advice already given:
We have submitted our URL 4 times in the last three years, about every 9 months and still are not listed. We comply with all of the guidelines and still can't get listed.
These are mutually exclusive statements - if you are suggesting your site every 9 months, you are not complying with the guidelines, which state that you should suggest your site ONCE to the ONE most appropriate category.

Shadow,

You are right and again I apologize for the comment.

Last question. Is there any amount of time that should pass before I resubmit? We are in the top 3 companies in that category and comply with all the rules so should I wait one year before I resubmit, 2 years?

DesertJules,

So there is never an amount of time that passes where you should resubmit? What if there was a database error? A competitor does not like it and deletes. It seems there has to be a period of time where you have to resubmit.

Thanks

As I said before, I would not resubmit. You have already done so several times. What would be the point? You can only do more harm than good. I would just forget about it and move on to a more productive means of promoting your site.
I thought this was an interesting thread. http://resource-zone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=44450

Really, a listing is not that important in bringing traffic to your site. Honest. :D

Really as jjwill and desertjules stated there is no reason to resubmit more than 4 times. Suggesting the site once to the best category is preferred. Suggesting it a second time to the same category 9 months later is ok because it would only overwrite the existing suggestion and would dramatically reduce the already slim chance there was an error in the suggestion process at the time of the original. The 3 & 4 times are overkill really but at worst it only will lengthen the review time because editors reviewing by submission date (some do, many don't) would sink it back down to the bottom of the suggestion pool. Beyond that is just spamming and if the spamming gets more extreme could result in a permanent ban of listing the site at all.

It has already been stated in this thread that it is highly unlikely that an editor was a competitor being abusive. 4 resuggestions would make that even less likely an scenario as over 200 editors can edit in that category with editalls and Meta's included. "Submit and forget" really is the best advice that can be given.
