Help choosing a category

Hi, I submitted a site about 6 weeks ago, and I have not heard back. I suspect that the delay is due to the fact that I chose poorly, when deciding which category to list in. However, I really do not know where to submit to. My forum covers a broad range of topics in one particular subgroup. It is not a mishmosh of unrelated categories, it is just that each one of them has it's own place in the directory.

To be more specific, it is an insurance forum that has sections for life, health, agents, etc... It is not a commercial forum, there is no advertising, lead generation or manipulation at all. It is simply a site where consumers and agents can get quality advice.

I submitted it to a specific genre of insurance, because I did not know what else to do.

Some guidance would be very much appreciated.

Hi
I would not worry. If the editor thinks the site is better placed in another category, they will move it. When it is reviewed you will not hear anything as we do not inform people of the results - either it gets listed or it doesn't. It can take some time before the site will be reviewed. Depending on a lot of circumstances this can take anything from a few days to several years.(see our Forum FAQ which will give more information).

For a forum a longer wait can be an advantage, as new forums are rarely listed - to be listed a forum must have matured enough to have enough posts to be of interest to a non-member. If the forum is reviewed and seen not to meet the criteria, it is likely to be left in unreviewed for checking again later (rather than being deleted).

So thank you for your suggestion, the best thing is now to develop your site and build it up for your target audience.

Eric,
I appreciate your help. One other concern that is related to your comment is that I did not submit it into the category that has the most value for the users. Many potential agents are saved from being hired by unscrupulous companies because of the advice they receive. The agent section is far more valuable than the health section that I submitted it to. Additionally, although the forum is rather new, it does have several thousand legitimate and helpful posts.

I suppose you are correct, that they will move it to the most appropriate category eventually, but I am curious as to what the best submission practice is in general, when you have a site that cannot be distilled down to one small category.

thanks

The best submissions policy is to go up a category until you find one that covers perhaps 70-80% of the content or 100% of the most important content. If you have to cover other things to make the site complete, but one aspect is the main thrust of the site but only (say) 50-70% of the content, by suggesting it to that specific area, you are indicating the relative importance to the reviewer (who of course will base their decision on what they see and understand of the site).

This works where the content is related but for a site wilth lots of unrelated content (skyscrapers, aardvaarks and patagonian nose-flutes) then either a topic for the aspect that is most important or a Personal Page category.

If you are sure you have a found a better category, [ looks around nervously] a single resuggestion to the better category with a note [accidentally submitted to x/../y] will be OK, once the system is back up. Please be sure that you have the best category this time :) .

To resubmit, do I do anything special, or do I just submit it to the new category and leave a note? I am pretty sure that I have got it this time!

Thanks

Basically just resubmit with a note - once dmoz is up and running again.
