My boss recently mentioned that he would like the description of our publication, which appears on google and other search engines, to be changed. Currently, it is a somewhat inaccurate and generally "non-eloquent" description.

After surfing the internet a bit, I learned that I must be an editor with the open directory project/resource zone to do this; additionally, this service (the ability to request an edit or sign up to be an editor) is temporarily unavailable.

In an attempt to be on the ball, could someone let me know how I would go about getting our description changed without becoming a directory editor myself?

Our URL is <url removed>
We are categorized as Games: Coin-Op: Magazines and E-zines

Currently, our description reads as follows:
This magazine has information. on music and games although they specialize more in the other vending business lines. Site only has information. about the magazine and ordering information.

We would like our description to be this:
VENDING TIMES is the leading media resource reporting on trends in the automatic vending and coin-operated amusement industries. News content targets operators working in merchandise vending, coffee service, foodservice, coin-operated music and games and bulk vending. VT is published monthly.

Thank you for your time and help- it is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Due to the technical problems, submitting update requests is also unavailable at the moment.

Normally you would navigate to the category where the site is listed, click the "Update Listing" link and fill out the form. An editor would then review your request and make any changes if needed. It's important to note, if the current description and title follow our editorial guidelines and no changes are needed, the update request will be declined. (For example if someone was requesting a description that included marketing language or hype)

At this moment it is not possible to change the description (please read the announcement at the top of the forums about oru technical problems).
After the problems are solved you can make an update request at DMOZ. But please first read about the way we describe websites. http://dmoz.org/guidelines/describing.html#descriptions

That's a nice description, in my opinion, with the exception of "VENDING TIMES is the leading " which needs to be changed to " A media resource reporting on trends ..." , because we don't repeat the title "VENDING TIMES" in the description (and not in caps), and the words " the leading" are suggestive and unprovable. :)

Once we're back up, just go to the category and hit the update button.

IMHO - it would be a great idea for you and your boss to read the ODP guidelines for descriptions. "VENDING TIMES is the leading media resource" is what we consider hype.

It is possible that the current description in the ODP may not be the best description of your site, but - it is also highly unlikely that your "suggestion" will elicit (once editors are able to process updates again) more than a "Hmmmm - looks like hype to me."

Just my 2cents.

From the FAQ here:
Q. I need to change the URL/title/description/category of a listing. How can I do this?
A. To submit a request for changes, go to the category that contains the listing. Click on the "Update" link in the top right corner. Read and complete the form as requested, being sure to fill in the correct fields.

Q. Will the change happen automatically?
A. No: like all other suggestions, an editor will review it. A request will be accepted only if it meets ODP guidelines, and accurately reflects what can be found on the site itself. Note that requests full of promotional language may be rejected at first glance, so please follow ODP guidelines for titles and descriptions.
