As a web developer I have been trying to submit the following site to the category of Business: Real Estate: Residential: Corporate Housing for several months, with no results. I just wanted to make sure I was not doing anything wrong. I understand that everyone is a volunteer so I even applied to be a volunteer. Any help would be appreciated. I am worried about losing my client at this point. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Cindy Wharton

Thank you

. It shouldn't be listed in both places, as they are very closely related categories. Probably some dis-overlapping and interlinking work needs to be done in that area -- and perhaps your submittal will be the trigger for it (so thanks!)

Thanks for your help...It is most definatly in the wrong category....please do not remove it from the waiting list for corporate housing
This is where it belongs....

Help - 6 months later

>Good morning.
I keep checking and I have seen no new link posted.
It has been over 6 months since I last asked you to look at this problem.
Can you please reassure me that my link is waiting to be listed in this category: http://www.dmoz.com/Business/Real_E...porate_Housing/

The forum is the place for that. Bump the thread where you previously asked for the submittal's status, and ask for a new status.

I don't know how months are counted in your part of the world ;)

From 08-10-2004 12:34 AM to 10-12-2004 02:33 AM seems just 2 months to me. :monacle:

Cindy, please do not act until a senior editor replies with a yes or no. Even though I edit in Regional, I am limited to lower levels, so I do not want to lead you astray. But since hutcheson said you could not be listed in both categories, this might be a case where you would need to use the update listing in the category where you are already listed. But there may be a reason I am not aware of why you were placed in the Regional section instead of the Business section. You might be ineligible for the Business section. But if not and it is indeed the best place for your site, then using the update listing to request a category change might be the way to go, rather than worrying about whether your initial suggestion is still in Business. But wait for another editor to comment before doing this.

My customer is losing business daily because their site does not pull up when the search term "corporate housing" is entered. This is because it is in the wrong category. I really need help. How do I get this accomplished. I am in the desperate stage now!

DMOZ is not a search engine - it is a directory with a somewhat limited search feature. If you are using ie: Google to search for "Corporate Housing" don't expect the ODP to get you higher ranking there.

What I am saying is simply: If you are looking to increase web site presence, do not depend on the OPD to get it for you. You need to be aggressive and submit to the many, many search engines, other directories, and yes,,, even the ffa's. With websites I author, I spend hours and hours submitting to a number of places. One word of caution, spamming the search engines is lethal and can get your site barred.

Yes, this usually means paying someone, if you don't have the experience to do it yourself. Try looking in http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Promotion/ for more information.

Remember, website presence will not increase overnight. If your client is expecting it, they/you will need to pay big money to the big boys to get a quicker inclusion.

It takes a lot of time for your website to show up in a search. Spiders (those fuzzy little things that cruise the internet looking for sites to devour) look at a variety of meta tags (description, title, keywords, etc.) plus actual site content. If your site is not properly set up, you will never get listed in the search engines.

I only want the site listed in the correct category. You told me in August that the was a problem with the categories being closely related!..I ONLY want to know how I get the site in the right category. I was told not to do anything untill a senior editor contacts me! I do not understand why it has taken so many messages and so many replies to just have one basic question answered. "How do I get my site listed into the correct category"

Ok. Here it is:

The Open directory Project is not a listing service for webmasters. Our priorities are significantly different from those of webmasters, SEOs and other related critters.

You will have wait as long as it takes for an editor to become interested enough in that category to go and process some submissions -- an act that is very low on our priority list. High on yours, low on ours.

You were given a status check and told to wait for six months. From August 9 until February 9 is six months. Please wait patiently.

When an editor takes a look at that category (it could be tomorrow, it could be in more than two years!) that editor will decide if some structural cleanup is necessary and will undertake the internal concensus-building necessary to do so. Directory building is not a race against the clock. If it takes us a year to get somethign right and implement it, well, it took us a year. It is neither good nor bad that it took a year.

There is nothing that you can say or do (or post) that will influence the process of getting your site reviewed or getting any category structures looked at.

See you on or after February 9 when you are next allowed to ask for a status check.
