Hi, Been trying to get one of my sites into dmoz for some time now and I am assuming that my issue is incorrect categorization. The primary business of this site is as an investment brokerage, however there are various subcategories. This site really fits into two categories -

Business: Investing: Brokerages: Foreign Exchange

and another which if existed would be -

Business: Investing: Brokerages: CFDs

I understand this company wishes to push heavily into the CFDs (contracts for difference) marketplace which is a relatively new product, in the upcoming year. However there is no category to support this type of investment trading. Is another category required? Have I been submitting to the wrong category? I know you guys are really busy, but could someone please find the time to advise.

Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.

Si

URL Removed

The URL was removed, so it may be difficult to answer my question, but if a new category is required, what is the process for requesting a suitable category?

Hello, and welcome to Resource-Zone. :)

New categories are created by editors when there are enough sites to justify one, and after discussion in the internal forums, so I'm afraid it isn't possible for a non-editor to suggest a new category with just one site. However if you could find several other unrelated and unlisted sites on the same topic and suggest them along with yours, it is possible an editor might consider a new category at some stage.

As for choosing a category, the general rule is that you find the one most specific to the site, and if there isn't one, then choose the next level up. If you feel the site does not fit any of the existing subcategories, just suggest it to the main investment brokerage category after the Announcement advises that the current technical problems are fixed. When a volunteer editor reviews your site (and there is no knowing when this may happen, as outlined in the FAQ), if he or she feels it belongs somewhere else, it will be moved there.
Editors do that all the time, so as long as you try to find the correct category, that is the best you can do to help us. Thank you. :)

You may be wrong in assuming that the choice of category is the reason why your site hasn´t been listed. There are lots of other possible reasons and more likely that no editor has got around to review your suggestion yet.

CFDs - a new category

Hi makrhod and thanks for your advice. I would certainly be able to suggest a number of sites that would be suited to this category. Is it possible to submit multiple sites simultaneously suggesting this as a new category?

Regards,

Si

No, you'll have to go through the submission form separately for each site you want to suggest. Suggest the sites to the category which would contain the new sub-category. If you add something like " [would fit in a new 'XXX' sub-category] " to the end of the description, that should direct the editor's attention to you idea for a new category.

New Category

Thanks chaos127,

How likely is it that the same editor is going to be looking at all my submissions and therefore be able to realize that there is a requirement for a new category?

What is the process?

Thanks in advance,

Si

Site suggestions are displayed by category. If you submit them all to the same category at the same time, there's a pretty good chance that an editor looking at one site marked in the way I've suggested will also find (or go looking for) the others too.

Hi,

Couple of things, if you could help me out:

Ive been trying to get to the suggest URL link but I'm continuously getting a Service Temporarirly Down screen.
Also I need to exact entry page for submitting my URL. After getting to the nearest cat/sub-category, I get links for suggest URL, update listing etc (about dmoz | suggest URL | update listing | become an editor | report abuse/spam | help). Is this the correct page?

My intended category would be country, city and golf clubs combined, but the nearest one is just golf clubs. Would it be possible to create a new category for club industry (Computers: Software: Industry-Specific: Club Management)?

Thnx in advance

A very reasonable question, and chaos127 is correct in presenting one possible scenario, but as you will have gathered from the FAQ and other resources, we are all volunteers and can spend our editing time doing whatever we choose, wherever we choose, within the bounds of our permissions.

So there is no way of predicting when an editor will visit that category, or if he will look at the site suggestions when he gets there, or if he does, how many of them he reviews, or how much time (if any) he will spend thinking about developing subcategories.
Maybe an editor will come along the very next week after we regain access to the directory, and decide to spend some time looking at site suggestions in that category. Maybe he will notice that some of them have a note attached such as chaos127 recommended. Maybe he will feel like raising a discussion in the internal forums about a proposed new category. Maybe agreement will quickly be reached. Or maybe not. Do you see how random and uncertain the "process" is? ;)

But it simply has to be that way, because otherwise someone would be issuing orders about where an editor had to spend his time, and that simply doesn't work in a volunteer organisation.

So suggestions of sites and new categories are certainly appreciated, even if there is no way of knowing when or if they will be considered. Thank you for taking time to help us build the directory. :)

Hello and welcome, k4dane.

May I suggest reading the Announcement at the top of every forum (which outlines the current technical difficulties) and the posts immediately preceding yours in this thread (which answer a very similar question about category selection and new subcategories). :)

hi k4dane

For the new category I think that has been answered in the thread - any new category is possible if ther are enough listable sites present to support one and an editor has the time to create one.

The 'suggest URL' link on the nearest cat/subcat is the correct link.

For the other matter 'Service Temporarirly Down screen' see the yellow announcement at the top of the thread.

regards
