How to determine if banned or penalized

We have been working on submission to directory for a while and haven't seen any progress, which appears to be standard protocol. I know these questions must drive you guys nuts.

I have read some postings about sites being banned/penalized. How would one know if his site had been banned/penalized and what could be done to remedy the problem. As a novice web guy, who has relied on contractors to handle these issues, I am concerned about site not being listed in directory. Basically, I am wondering can an owner of a site fix problems created by others who were paid to help build site and deal with submission process?

Thanks,
John

we don't give any form of status, nor would we tell you if your site had run afoul of or listing guidelines.

We can tell you that in the vast majority of these cases, it is simply a matte of an editor not having looked at the site.

You said it has been a while, unfortunately, there is no context for that. Suggested site can often wait two years, three years, or longer to get look at -- this is covered in our FAQ.

I know this was not the answer you sought, but it is the best we are able to give within the forum rules.

It's fairly hard, no, it's expletive-deleted hard, to get a site banned. (You don't realize how industrious these spammers are!) Roughly speaking, if you aren't creating doorway or fraternal-mirror domains (houston-defense-lawyer.com, houston-criminal-lawyer.com, houston-defender.com, etc., etc., etc.,) so that there's one site fully representing the business, and you aren't offering bribes or making threats to editors, then there's not much that'll affect the site.

Added: I would never recommend depending on an SEO firm to suggest a site to the ODP. Much of what most of them do is counterproductive, and the ODP is deliberately structured to be friendly to helpful surfers -- whereas SERP perps can't always successfully pretend to be helpful surfers.

Thanks

Thanks, that gives me some piece of mind. I have learned about SEOs and have started doing it all in house myself.
