You can (usually) suggest a site as a help to editors looking for sites on a particular subject. But that isn't working right now: see the announcement, which covers what we know.

Even when the suggest a Site was working, I never got listed. Hope to get another chance someday if they get the servers working again.

I have been trying for several years (Yes, it is true) to submit sites to some categories, especially to Regional: Europe: Spain: Autonomous Communities: Canary Islands: Gran Canaria: Travel and Tourism: Lodging: Vacation Rentals: Apartments

I did get one accepted a considerable time ago, but since then nothing. After a long time I decided that the reason that I couldn't get any listed, and that no new ones have appeared in that category for years, was that it doesn't have an editor. So I applied.

I explained that I had an interest in the category, I am literate, articulate and think that I could do a good job at it, and do it fairly. I was rejected. I could only assume that it was thought that because I had a declared interest I would not be capable of being fair. If had had wanted to be biased towards my own sites, I would, of course, have used a different, anonymous email address and not declared an interest.

The area I live in in Gran Canaria has lots of sites that fit this category. I manage some of them myself and I know many of the people who have other sites and, I presume, would like to get listed but can't either.

I guess I should apply again and hope I get accepted, but if I remember from the last time, it took me a long time to do the application.

People are rejected for reasons of self-interest, but merely owning / being affiliated with a site which could be listed in the category you apply to is not in itself a reason for rejection. There would have been one or more other reasons for your rejection -- these would most likely have been listed in the email you received.

If had had wanted to be biased towrads my own sites, I would, of course, have used a different, anonymous email address and not declared an interest.
Now doing that would be a very good reason for rejection and/or account termination -- depending on when it was discovered. Since a lot of editing revolves around trust, we really appreciate honesty. Trying to hide things is not a good way to proceed. :D

There's more information on making applications in the FAQ at this forum, and at http://editors.dmoz.org/help/become.html . The Meta Guidelines explain how applications are evaluated.
