How do I find out the editor of a category?

I been trying to get into that category for 4 years. I submit my site probably once every 6 months or once a year and usually never get a reply. Does it not have an editor?

How do I find out the editor of that category or if there is one? I notice people on these forums talking about contacting an editor like they know where to look and stuff. Where would you look for this type of information?

If you had looked more closely you would have notice that editors have told these people not to contact editors to ask for favors or to ask about the status of their suggestion. Editors are advised not to answer such emails.

I am not sure if there is a bug with the forum interface at ODP, but I could have swore that I posted a response to this thread earlier ...........

Fair enough, at least you were transparent about it (not that I agree with the bad advice bit).

As a codicil, would you kindly enlighten me as to why namesappear at the bottom of category listing pages on ODP with links?

Editors are named at the bottom of categories so you can see who is a listed editor in that category. For those of us with directory-wide privileges, being a listed editor on a category shows which sections or categories we either specialize in or want to be listed in for some reason. Those editor names link to each editor's profile page because, well, that's what the profile pages are there for -- so that people can learn more about that editor (if that editor chooses to share additional information). The email link on an editor's profile page *can* be used to email an editor (for example, you could use it to suggest a new category), but most of the legitimate reasons for contacting an editor are now covered by other features on the site: for example, rather than reporting bad listings to the editor, there's a link on each category page and a dedicated thread here for that. We strongly discourage use of the form to contact an editor regarding a site suggestion, hence the reason that questions here about how to contact an editor get met with a recommendation not to contact the editor at all.

I wish I could say that it was a satisfactory explanation as to why editors' names appear with links to their profiles, but that is not the case. Nevertheless, a response is exactly that (and is better than nothing).

I suppose the public email listing on the editors ODP profile is one of those relics in the pipeline to be removed then ....... in good time, say 6 months or whenever they get to it, since there is no legitimate reason left to list it.

"Most of the legitimate" is not the same thing as "All of the legitimate" so the email link isn't likely to go anywhere anytime soon.

Having read a few of your responses to mine and other users' posts, your level of cynicism (equally matched by your apparent enthusiastic comitement to the ODP) does not surprise, or for the case in hand, bother me at all. Thanks for contributing your knowledge and experience to this thread.

ODP is a worldwide operation, however, the editors seem to be drinking from the same well! In this instance, you just shot yourself in the foot as I am free to assume that using the published mail to contact the editor of acategory is a legitimate use (thats if you find it yourself and not told of it in a thread on the ODP fora!).

How have I shot myself in the foot? I clearly posted earlier that the email form could be used for things other than asking about your site suggestion. (Don't expect a reply to any email you send, mind you.)

At the risk of falling foul to the un-documented rules of the ODP fora I will say that I have (on a couple of occassions) contacted the editor of a category I had submited to, and on the one occassion, I did get a response. May I add that, as is the case with most "unsolicited" emails I send (not just to ODP editors), I did not feel I was owed a response.

This is not an official ODP forum. It is owned and run by volunteer editors in an effort to provide more information to the public about the directory.
As with any other forum, if the same questions are asked over and over again, it is usual to direct people's attention to the FAQ which is linked from the top of every page.
It is also standard forum practice to advise people to search for previous answers to their questions, or responses to their suggestions.
It is a waste of everyone's time for the same things to be posted repeatedly, just because people don't like (or read) the answers that are provided.

As for other matters specific to this forum, they can easily be found in the Posting Guidelines and in sticky threads at the top of each page.
Not so much "undocumented" as "unread".

It seems to me that this thread had already served its purpose in post #2. The rest of it is more about Fantabublast trying to score points off the folks who've tried to explain things to him. This isn't a schoolyard and mebbe it's time to close the thread.

The category is very outdated, and inaccurate. I have volunteered to become an editor of this category, given that I'm an acedemic expert of this category. I havent gotten a response at all, and I would like to contact the editor, or become an editor if possible.

If you did not get a response within 2 weeks for an editor application you can ask about it in the "becoming editor" part of this forum.

Contacting an editor is of nu use. If you knwo of websites that could be listed in that category just suggest them. If you know of listings that are not correct either make an update request or report them in the quality control section of this forum.
