Simple question.

I was under the impression that a site should only be listed once in DMOZ, did I misunderstand?

Yes.

With a few exceptions (for instance, real estate agents), there is not a hard and fast limit.

The rule is that a site should only be SUGGESTED once. Once the editors find the site, they can then browse through it to see how and where it should be listed.

But even the submittal rule has a few exceptions. Even so, figure on suggesting a site (or group of related sites) no more than twice in each applicable language.

Yes, you misunderstood. Understandably, perhaps, because of potential confusion between our rules for suggestion and our rules for listing.

[deleted here: what hutcheson said, in slightly different words]

The two exceptions to the "suggest once" rule have to do with regional relevance and languages in which the site is written. We have found it useful to solicit suggestions to both a topical and a regional category in those cases where a site is relevant to both, and to solicit multiple suggestions if the site is written (not machine translated) in multiple languages.

Ok, that is perhaps something that could be stated more clearly in your about page.

So potetially, my commercial site which also provides information about pet care might one day appear in more than one section because of the diverse content?

If it's in multiple languages and/or provides locally specific services maybe.
If not, probably not.

<added> The site doesn't mention a walk in store and only ships within the UK, so just the one listing within UK/../Shopping.

Thank you hutcheson, this is useful to me. I have a couple of sites listed in DMOZ, but they are single subject sites.

One that I have been waiting over 2 years to get listed is a UFO site that I would like to see listed in various directories as the site covers all UFO subjects. I thought I might have submitted to a specialized directory and was dropped because other subjects were covered.
