USUALLY, you can use the "update listing" link to suggest changes (including URL changes). As for all suggestions, an editor will review it and the website and decide what action is appropriate. As for all suggestions, there's no timeline or priority imposed on the editors, but "update listing" suggestions are often given a high priority by editors (because they may describe a quality problem.)

Right now, sigh, see the announcement. My guess is that site suggestions and update suggestions will return at about the same time. I won't guess when that would be.

But the problem persists: I can't update my url since last sunday service is temporarely unavailable-check back in a day or two and that is untill now friday.
So somewhere there is a major technical problem or so.

Hi,

I understand all these issues, but I am unclear on one thing. I know that I cannot use the update listing form, but if an editor stumbles across my site and sees that the URL has changed would it be possible for them to update it without my requesting it, or is this functionality not there either?

Thanks!

Such updates are frequently done by editors (also now). Outside suggestion is not even the primary input for improving the directory. And just in case.... it is not recommended to try to contact editors for things which should be done through the normal forms.

For two months, editors couldn't do anything either. But now, yes, we can both add and modify listings.

Thanks for the info.

sfromis, Just so you know my reasoning in asking; I understand not to contact editors over such matters, I was just contemplating putting up a large "this page has moved" notice instead of my current redirect for the next time an editor drops by, as I would assume editors routinely check for dead or signifigantly altered content links.

In fact it would seem editors might have more time for this currently, as new suggestions obviously aren't coming in.

There's a bot that does this. It keys off "301" style "permanent redirect" HTML status codes: if you can do that as well, it would be ideal.

No matter how we notice (whether 301 for the 'bot or text notice for the humans), we'll make the change. But you increase your odds by making it more likely that we'll notice.

>In fact it would seem editors might have more time for this currently, as new suggestions obviously aren't coming in.

A very reasonable assumption.

I have the same problem - my webpage has since moved, so do you mean I can do something automatic to the site to get it moved? I'd rather not have to annoy the editors if I can avoid it...

If "301 permanent redirect" means something to you (or your resident techie), then the answer is "yes, do a 301 permanent redirect". Otherwise, the answer is "no".

>I'd rather not have to annoy the editors if I can avoid it...

Telling editors about an error in a listing is NOT an annoyance! We put up (gratefully) with some otherwise-very-annoying people so long as they're giving us highly valuable information like that!

The reason you'd want to do a "suggest listing update" is, the automatic process only works every few months (because 'bot runs that often). So we might get the problem fixed sooner if we heard about it the old manual way.

*Googles*

Cool -

<?
Header( "HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently" );
Header( "Location: http://www.new-url.com" );
?>

For those of us using php. I'm just a little worried because my last website was from lycos and they will take down my site as soon as they see one of these which may be before the site gets crawled again... just a little worried about that. Another annoyance is that the previous website is the first answer when you google it's title, and the new site is nowhere to be seen, even though it shares the same title and contains more material :(

Both symptoms of the same problem: the old site is still up. But note: Google will recognize the 301 redirect also.

OK - i've set up the redirect - now I'll just keep on keeping my eyes shut hoping that google crawls it before lycos take me down :-s.

p.s. If this was a bad idea, please let me know! Thanks for your help!

The "update listing" button is now working. Please use it, in addition to the 301 redirect or any other redirect you may have on the site.

Hey, thanks for getting back to me again - I actually noticed that before i came back here and I filled it in as well as the 301 and now my new address is the top answer to it's title again and the dmoz entry is also updated (one day after filling in form) - I am now officially moved! Can't thank you guys enough - I have that excited tingly feeling now tht everything is in order and it's thanks to your invaluable help :).

There's no "getting listed." There is only "helping the editors by suggesting sites."

Because of site hijacking, site repurposing, etc., it must take the same process to re-list a URL formerly listed, as to list a URL for the first time.
