How to Query a Category Editor with no Email

Hi,

Sometimes, it becomes necessory to query a category editor directly regarding reasons for rejection of submission, or update not being made (either in total or partial form), or delay in editing a particular category, and so on..

Few editors provide link to email them for any queries but others do not. How can such editors be contacted personally?

(Please don't mention Update URL form). This is quite a time consuming job.

Regards

Guddu

Dear guddu,

None of the reasons you mention above are valid. You never need to contact one editor.

You must understand that the ODP is a team project. That's why the update url form is really the best way to adress any situation you mention, as it can be treated in a fait way by any member of the team.

Hi yapuka

Thanks for such a prompt reply.

I would like to give an example to clear the situation. One of our client's site had been listed in the following categories initially:

http://dmoz.org/Business/Electronics_and_Electrical/Electromechanical/Connectors_and_Terminals/

and

http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/India/Business_and_Economy/Industries/Manufacturing/Electrical/

with the title & description as:

Essen Deinki - ISO 9002 manufacturer of connectors, terminals, and microswitches. Includes company background, product information, and contact details.

and

Essen Deinki - Manufacturer of connectors, terminals, and microswitches.

respectively.

But, because my client is into the business of both electronics and electrical connectors (and not just electrical), I explained this in the Update Form and requested the editor to change the Regional category to :

http://dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/India/Business_and_Economy/Industries/Manufacturing/

with the following title & description:

Essen Deinki - Manufacturer of electronic & electrical connectors, terminals, and microswitches.

(When asked in resource-zone why "electronic & electrical" could not be added in the description for the top listing, I got the answer as because it is in the category name itself). But in the regional category, it is not included anywhere in the category URL.

So, it becomes necessary, to ask an editor mentioned for the category for the same.

regards

Guddu

I suppose this is a variation on the "no-one is taking care of that cat" theme. yapuka is absolutely right to say that there are lots of people able to take care of a cat even if their name is not listed in it.

Should you need to contact somebody, go up the category tree until you find a cat with an editor name, and send feedback to that one. But please note that:
 • no editor is required to answer any FB
 • it's no use asking for a site to be processed before the others that are waiting. We are not supposed to do any kind of favors, although we can process submissions in any order we want. [/list:u]

Hi tuisp,

What I meant was the category editor only (whose name is listed under the category).

I the above example, my site got moved to the spectified category, but "electronic & electrical" was not added to the description. This is a partial update and I would like to enquire for a reason.

Thanks & Regards

The "Send to..." link is an email link. Is that what you are wondering?

Hi steveb,

To some extent, Yes.

But the main issue is if the link is not there, how can one enquire for an example like above. Should we use resource-zone itself to understand why a partial update has been made?

The "Sent to" link is always there on an active editor's profile page. Do you mean when there is no listed editor in a category?

Here is probably the best place to ask. Partial updates are common (e.g. moving site to requested category but not accepting the request to change the description).

That link is put there automatically by the software. Can you provide an example of a profile that doesn't have the link? It might be a bug.

The only time when there is no such link is when the editor is no longer active in the ODP. Of course you cant feedback editors who aren't with the ODP any more

Actually, that isn't the case at the moment. I was going to report it as a bug.

And what about the editors whose profile cannot be visited.

(No link in DMOZ for such editors' profile: "Volunteer to edit this category". Link is provided for profile only if "Category editor: ####" is written under a category. If clicked on editor's name it goes to 'become an editor link')

Does This mean, that anybody can act as a volunteer to edit this category or is Volunteer a particular editor? I am confused?

That simply means, that - at the moment - the category is edited only by editors of higher up categories. Apart from that, it seems that you don't understand the nature of the ODP:

The ODP is completely run by volunteers. AOL just provides servers and technical personal to manage the system. ODP has been founded by some volunteers and is still run by the community. That means that anyone can become an editor. See the sticky posts in the "Become an editor" forum for more details.

Thanks windharp

I was such a dumb to believe that Volunteer is a particular editor's name.

Hmmm... "India"... Maybe you suffer from the same problem I have: English is only a learned language, not the primary one. So we are unfamiliar with some words and phrases.

This is not the case.

This is because, you can have any name as an editor.

U

umesh

I would suggest that for the problem you should mail an Editall/ Meta – you will find many here and you can just PM them

Also from where did "India" issue arise - Accepted that English is only the Learned Language in India and not primary. Not necessary this is the reason - anyone can fall for it.
