How to suggest a new category?

The title pretty much explains it all... I'm looking to submit my site to a category that is not yet created - how can I suggest a new category? Would it be best to drop an email directly to the section editor, or is there a better way to do this?

Thanks!

As a general rule, a category will not be created for one site. You would be better off suggesting it to the closest matching category.

I really believe that there are a high number of sites that fit this category, so I'll just go ahead and say which category I'm talking about and show everyone my ultimate dorkiness:

http://www.dmoz.org/Games/Video_Games/Massive_Multiplayer_Online/

There are many categories for just about every Massive Multiplayer Game already... some are big games, and some are very small obscure games. The category I am looking to suggest is for a Massive Multiplayer Game that is set to be released in the next two weeks. The game will be sold in all major retail stores from North America to Europe and back, so it will have more sites and traffic than about 90% of the already existing categories in that section.

Since my site is targetted solely at this new game, it really wouldn't make any sense sitting in the "Massive Multiplayer Online" general section.

I'll take an easy guess - you are talking about D&D Online. The game will indeed inevitably be amazingly popular, because the target audience of the D&D universe is contiguous to the one of videogames and, in particular, MMORPGs. Also, the game world is extremely true to the franchise, and the combat system is superior (read: more fun) than the one of most MMORPGs out there. And the gaming community does need a new solid gameplay-focused MMORPG.

From what I have seen in the past, considering the importance of this game, I am sure the editors at Dmoz.org will promptly create a category for it once there are enough good websites focused only on this game, so have no fear!

Very close, haha. I'm talking about RF Online, which is actually published by the same people that are doing D&D Online - Codemasters. RF Online is an "import" from Korea, where it has been released for about a year and already has a very strong following (something like 500,000 subscribers or so I believe between various Asian countries). Being an import, there is obviously tons of information about the game available already.

I think D&D's release date is actually a month or two off yet, isn't it?

Anyhow, getting back on topic, should I just trust in the DMOZ to create a category automatically, or is there someway I can help the process and suggest the category?

Hehe no, D&D Online is scheduled for am end of February release (two weeks), while RF online should be available in a week or less, from what I read in press releases.

In any case, I am no editor, so I cannot answer your precise question. I know that if enough websites are submitted for that specific game, ODP editors will create a category for it. You know, since ODP is a volunteer project, often editors follow their own passions when choosing which category they want to take care of at a certain time of the year... and since there are many editors that I am sure love MMORPGs, it's possible someone will take care of this game in the next future. If I were you, I would have suggested the website to the generic category, and then I would have added a note saying the website was focused on that precise game. Another thing that might help is the MMORPG category description. The description says you must suggest to a subcategory IF a subcategory is available.

But you will probably get some better reply from ODP people, I am sure, since your request is legitimate.

Silex, if you submit say six quality websites on the subject to the parent category, most likely that will be enough for an editor to create the subcat.

Just as an update to this thread, there is now, one day later, a category for RF Online, haha. Guess I just should have waited another day.

I wonder what the possibility is that an editor read about the game in your post - then went out and researched it because it caught his/her interest? We'll never know if the category was created because you mentioned it yesterday or if an editor was already collecting sites for that eventual category already (unless he/she announces it :D )

Haha cool! As I said, I knew somebody was going to create it about it soon... and on a note, I noticed that D&D Online obviously already has a category! I missed it yesterday!
