I'll be honest and say I really don't think the site has enough content to warrant listing at all, let alone in the Web Portals category. You only offer a dozen or so links (including links to at least two of your own sites) and a search box from your personal page. That's extremely thin on the content even for a personal homepage.

You are still in the queue, though, along with several hundred other sites. It will likely be some time before anyone actually reviews the site and my guess would be that the review will result in the deletion of the site.

Fair comment, perhaps, but the site is young. However, given the tightly targetted topic, well, there aren't a whole lot of links to act as a portal to. (And there are a couple of other portals listed that contain not much more content).

let alone in the Web Portals category.

Can you suggest a better category?

my guess would be that the review will result in the deletion of the site.

Hopefully the reviewer will be satisfied with the deletion of the application rather than the site itself ... ? <img src="/images/icons/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Anyhow, thanks for the feedback.

Regards, Ralph.

Truth? Sometimes not.

But it's _usually_ all we can do.

Usually.

Hi there ODP folks,

Just checking in to see if my status has changed in the last month.

The site has been filled out - a little - in the meantime, but another criticism was that "web portal" was not the right place for my site. I've been searching around for an alternative, but the closest I can come up with is something like Society / People / Personal Homepages / Anonymous / B. Can anyone here suggest something better? (Something less vague at least.)

Thanks for the help.

Regards, Ralph.

Hi again ODP folks!

I'd appreciate it if someone could give me an update on the status of http://www.bearpark.org/ in Computers / Internet / On_the_Web / Web_Portals.

It's already been commented that it'll almost certainly be rejected for this cat, and I later queried if Society / People / Personal_Homepages / Anonymous / B might be a more suitable location. Unfortunately I've had no reply as yet.

So, please be honest with me. Has my original submission been rejected already? Is my later suggested cat suitable? If so, should I resubmit there, or can my original submission be moved?

Or is my site still so lousy and content-free that I should take it away from the whole DMOZ process until it has been sufficiently improved?

My thanks in anticipation for your input.

Best regards, Ralph.

What you really need is unique content rather than just a list of links. The ODP is itself a list of links so it doesn't tend to list other ones anywhere other than specific directory categories. Single page sites are also pretty rarely listed - even if your 200 words or so were unique content that's still not very much. I'd get developing the site so that it's got more to it by the time an editor comes to review it. At the moment I'd be surprised if it got listed in the Personal_Homepages category either.

Thanks for the honest feedback John.

Hmm, maybe I'm too hopefully reading between the lines of your reply, but is it possible you are suggesting that "Web Portals" may not be the incorrect location for my site - assuming the (probably insurmountable) "unique content" problem could be solved?

Regards, Ralph.

Yes, you're being hopeful!

I don't quite get it - what's the point of your page? Are you trying to drive traffic to those domains or are you just putting up a links page for fun? If you're trying to drive traffic to the other domains then I'd concentrate on trying to get those listed if they're not already. If you're putting the page up just for fun then I can't see that it really matters much if the ODP doesn't list it. If you really really want to get it listed all the same then why not write some content about famous bearparks, people, places etc., maybe find some pictures, contact other Bearparks to get their contributions to your page etc. etc. - then it could be validly listed in the Personal Pages category.

To get an idea of what level of content is required, take a look at some of the sites listed in that category. Keep in mind that the content level bar is getting higher all the time, and some sites that were listed a while ago would probably be removed if we re-reviewed them today. To be listed, your site should be bigger and better than at least half of the sites already there.

what's the point of your page?

It's my surname. It's just a links page for fun. ODP listing would probably boost it's position when doing a google for "bearpark" which would save a searcher some time as my links are somewhat more useful than those offered by google.

As for your suggestions, yep, that the direction I was planning to go. As soon as I get a round tuit.

Thanks again for the suggestion/advice. I appreciate it.

Regards, Ralph.

Thanks for the worrying advice. No place for the little guy anymore, eh?

Thanks again.
