If you have a free sec, can you tell me how many are in that queue? Also, I am noticing that editors get slammed by submissions in some categories. I realize you guys try to keep very knowledgable people in their respective categories, but wouldn't it make sense to place a priority on getting editors for categories that have none? I applied to be a regional editor for a category regarding darts months ago. That cat still has no editor and probably get backlogged, as many others do. You guys have people willing and able to help you out and take a little pressure off. I for one, would be willing to dedicate quite a bit of time in the area of Darts. I am extremely knowledgable about the sport and how they run leagues and feel that OPD is an awesome additon to the net. I just think you editors job would be much easier if you didn't have to pick up the slack for categories that have no editor. I'm sure some of the editors that have to poke through these unedited cats don't have a vast amount of knowledge on the area either. Just my 2 cents. I'd help out any way I could...

There are less than twenty sites waiting for review in Sports: Darts at the moment.

If you are still interested in becoming an editor, choose a nice small category which you'd like to extend. It's always a good idea to read our Guidelines before filling in the application form.

By the way, the description you've given in your submission looks pretty good. Don't hesitate to reapply.

There are a lot of specialized categories in the directory that could definitely use a person with specialized knowledge. In your case darterz it sounds like you could (eventually) bring a lot to directory. There are numerous darts categories spread all over the directory in addition to the big "main" ones. I suggest you apply for a small one where you can provide three good URLs with good, non-hype descriptions, and if you are rejected for some reason, read the reason, make a change and apply again. Once you are actually in the directory it becomes much easy to know where there are needs in your interest area and you can begin a serial process of applying for different smaller, then medium and finally larger categories. Things certainly could move faster sometimes, but a person with a strong interest in helping out with a topic should just keep at it. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight. I have considered applying for categories and even have twice in the past. The first time was waaaaaay back, months ago. I was never accepted nor declined. The second time was not too long ago. Basically, it is a turnoff when you are trying to help the community out and you never hear anything one way or the other for months. My point is that maybe whoever approves or disapproves editors should place a little priority on doing so. Everybody wins in that situation. If they have a quality editor that they approve, the ODP benefits from the knowledge and experience. The other editors gain, as they do not have to pick up the slack for categories that have no editor. Not to mention the fact that they may not even have knowledge in the area that they are picking up slack for. By leaving zealous people in the cold for months, without any indication of whether they can help out or not, you are quite possible losing a lot of people who could make your life a little easier. I realize you guys get backed up big time. A lot of that could be easily alleviated by simply considering the applications you get in a timely manner. Then you would have a lot of much needed help.

P.S. Can somebody look into why my domain gets banned each and every time that I post in here. It's a pain having to wait days to respond to anything. I have to email admin, then try back the next day. If that doesn't work, the next day. What is wrong with the darterz.com domain anyways? That may explain why I never get approved for anything or even get a confirmation or declination. If your system is thinking I have a banned domain, nothing probably gets through to begin with. Thanks in advance.!

Somebody else more techno-geeky than me should try to answer, but the main thing is you should have gotten a response if rejected. Rejections are always sent out (unless of course there is an error or mistake of some sort). Also, you can ask here in the apply to be an editor forum about the statusof your application. It should normally just take a couple weeks or less to get it reviewed and dealt with one way or another.

Well last question first

I don't know , but the forum is not officially related to DMOZ, is run by a group of Meta editors, and in no way should have any influence on a DMOZ listing.

Regarding applying to be an editor - Something is going wrong if you are not getting any responses.

When you first apply, an automated email is sent to you. You *must* reply to this email before your application gets into the queue of new editor applications. (This is just an email verification check). Then you should receive another email saying some thing like:
'Thanks for applying to become an editor!

You will receive a reply as soon as your application
has been reviewed.'

At that point the editor application is added to the queue to be looked at.

If it is approved you should get an email with guideline information, if declined it is possible you receive no email, but normally you will get a generic list of possible reasons, sometimes with additional info such as 'Please apply for a more specific geographical category.' (from one of my early rejections )

If you used a hotmail account some people have had dmoz mesages sent directly to the spam bin, and this may happen with other services/mail filters. Make sure you mail box is available for the emails to reach you after you apply.

Good luck

Well, some time ago, I applied to be the editor of;
http://dmoz.org/Sports/Darts/Organizations/United_States/Ohio/
It is small and regionalized and I was very careful to fill out the application in accordance with the guidelines. It is suggested that you start small, to gain the knowledge to deal with larger groups. This particular group only has 9 sites. Since it doesn't have a lot of activity, could that be why it was not a high priority for finding an editor? Is there a way to find a list of groups that desperately need an editor? Then if one has the qualifications that they feel would benefit the group, they could apply??? Thanks for the QUICK response on the last one!!!

Yes I did receive the automated one that needs a response. I sent the response, but have never received anything regarding being accepted or declined. That was back in like October or November...

You've probably been rejected then. Sometimes the meta editors (who review the applications) don't send out emails, but usually they do.

If you do want to apply again, have a thorough read of the ODP Guidelines at http://dmoz.org/guidelines/ , in particular the section on describing sites. That will give you some idea about what to put on your application form.

Maybe you were rejected back in October/November, but you currently have an application in the queue that was submitted on Jan 16, 2003. We are always working through the queue, but it seems ODP was everyone's New Years resolution this year, and we have quite a few applications to work through

Further to your query in the other thread, your site was never rejected from that category. All that resubmitting did was overwrite the one that was already sitting there with one dated Feb. 12.

This is becoming a VERY frustrating process. This site was initially submitted to a localized group, as that was what I was told I should do by a Meta. Then it was rejected by the editor who picked up the Ohio category. Seeing as that category had no editor and it was small, I applied to become an editor. After two months of slow responses and rejections, I finally got things right and was accepted to become an editor in that localized group. Then, following the advice of those on here and other editors, I changed my submission to place the site in question into the right category. This was done in December or sometime ago. Can't remember the exact date. In this forum, in early January, I was told that things appeared to be in order, according to guidelines of DMOZ, and that there were less than 20 sites to be reviewed. A month and a half later, that category is still not cleared. People should not have to go through this much trouble to have pertinent, original-content, valuable sites added to DMOZ. That is why I applied to become an editor. Not to get "my" site listed. But to help out in an area of which I had expertise. Knowing what is involved in editing small categories, I cannot understand why some of these categories go for months on end without anything happening. I would love to try to help out with other subcats of the area of which I have a full understanding of. But I have already been warned of the fact that I have a site in the dart field and would be watched, as to not show favoritism. So what is a person to do? You guys are backlogged and cannot keep up with what's going on. There are people who can help, but won't because they know they will be rejected since they have a site pertaining to that field. Yet their site continues climbing towards being the authority in the field mentioned. Climbing towards being number one in that field. Yet that site cannot be included in DMOZ. DMOZ has a huge impact on how a site is listed in Search Engines. This is not flaming the organization in any way. I have devoted MANY hours into trying to become a part of this organization. Helping out and doing what I can. I just think there areas that can be improved. DMOZ is an integral part of todays internet. And while you want to be selective and not place garbage sites into a directory with the integrity of DMOZ, there are many quality, pertinent sites, that sit out there for ages. At this point, I am going to focus my efforts on my editor abilities. Ensure myself that I know exactly what procedures are in place and make sure my category conforms to every guideline and stipulation placed upon it. I am giving up on my site being added. It is currently number 3 on an International Ranking list that is based in the Netherlands. The only English site on the list. My visitors are coming from about 40 different countries. It is currently number 37 on the PHPNuke Top Site List. Out of well over 300. AND it is the ONLY dart site listed. If it is not pertinent enough, with original content, I am curious to know what would warrant it being added. Other sites in that category go ages without updates, etc. And have maybe 10% of the traffic of my site. So I guess DarterZ will survive. At any rate, this thread can be closed. I will not inquire anymore, nor will I take others advice and resubmit, etc. I am an editor, and while I know that I am not even in a position to have a confilct of interest, judging by some of the message traffic I have received, I get the impression that others think that is my only intention. Thanks for the time and suggestions many of you have given to me here, but I have expended all the energy I will into getting this site included.

That is all very well, but editors are volunteers and work at whatever speed they feel like working at. With thousands of submissions to be looked at, we aren't bothered about any one particular site being reviewed, or not. As long as people are doing something and the amount of sites listed increases then the overall quality of the directory improves. As for taking months for 20 sites to be reviewed, well, yes that is just 20 sites in one area; people must be busy elsewhere at this time. Someone will look at them sometime, we just don't make a promise as to when that will be. We do have jobs, family, a real life and other commitments to get on with. There are a few editors that spend most of their awake hours doing ODP, but in the main people put in time when they can. And that is all you can hope for. Additionally there has been a lot of server and software changes over the last few months, some bugs, and other problems that have meant that the system worked slowly for some editors, making editing a chore rather then a pleasure. I was granted a category with 150 sites in it, and over a 100 more awaiting review (with all the duplicate submissions already removed). When all is well, then I can review about 4 or 5 sites per hour. It is going to take me weeks and weeks to get through that lot (it is nowhere near the category in question), as I can only spare a few hours here and there. When the system was running slow, I found that for weeks on end, that every time I had free time for editing, the system wasn't in a usable enough state to do useful work. Now that the server has been tweaked, the new RDF has been produced, and other changes implemented, we are all hoping that things will get back to the normality we had up until 6 months ago.

People will eventually review your stuff. Just be patient.

"I have a site in the dart field and would be watched, as to not show favoritism. So what is a person to do?"

Not show favoritism.

The Directory wants experts in fields doing editing. of course, the Directory also wants those people not doing unfair or lousy editing.

The Directory is volunteers. If nobody wants to edit a category, it won't get edited.... unless somebody with an interest in it perseveres and pays their dues and does what you have started to do. (by the way, if you have become an editor you should go to the member's lounge and have your "member" tag changed to "editor".)

I'll tell you what. I'm counting on you you take the time to eventually gain editing permissions in those Darts categories and do a good job with them. The only reason that category doesn't have a zero queue is because someone like you hasn't stepped up, and yes jumped through hoops, and taken that responsibility. Okay, you can't do it today, but put in some time as an editor, read the internal forums and here, and gradually ask for new permissions and do a good job with them. That is the answer, not asking folks with little interest and less expertise to do the job.

This is a strange post to have in this forum. Why aren't you asking about this in the internal ODP forums?

Is there any change in the status of this site, now that another 2 and a half months has passed? Thank you for your time.
