I believe I submitted http://www.hawaiianphotos.net/ to http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Visual_Arts/Photography/
"Shopping: Visual Arts: Photography" on 8/4/2003. I thought this was an appropriate category as we sell the photography of a single artist, VK Tylor - his images are amazing. We have his work in over 130 retail outlets in Hawaii but this is the beginning of our WEB presence.

I hope we meet your standards and would readily defer to dmoz editorial judgment regarding a more appropriate categorization.

Thank You for investigating our submission

Hmm, maybe you didn't read 'Before submitting any sites to this category, please take the time to browse through the subcategories to make sure your site is included in the appropriate category.', and you didn't notice that there are no other sites listed on this level?

Your site is awaiting review here, along with several hundred others.

I suggest you resubmit to a more appropriate subcategory, i.e. http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Visual_Arts/Photography/Exhibits/Realistic/ (the 'Scenic' *or* the 'Travel and Location' subcategory of Realistic might be better, take the time to look around which one of these three is the most appropriate).

I’ve tried to follow your advice by resubmitting our site to a more granular subcategory of the one we originally submitted to. Specifically I've tried to suggest we be listed in http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Visual_Arts/Photography/Exhibits/Realistic/Nature/

Now I’ve tried this on at least three different days and five separate occasions and each time
I just get a green progress bar time-out.

So since I can't seem to break through could the ODP volunteer editor of this category be informed of my intent?

Can the original submission be modified?

Is there life after error?

Thanks for your time, I appreciate your help!

As you might have read in several other posts, we suffer some problems with our scripts pointing to the wring servers at the moment. it is not fully clear if it solved right now and still has to propagate through the different mirrors or has not been fixed completely.

I've not been able to have a successful resubmission
and I've tried on two different machines and on numerous occasions. I go to the following URL

http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi?where=Shopping/Visual_Arts/Photography/Exhibits/Realistic/Nature

and after filling out the form and clicking the submit button on the bottom of the page it just hangs.

My request is this, since I've been unable to resubmit would it be possible to alert the ODP editor in charge of http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Visual_Arts/Photography/
to simply guide our site into the /Exhibits/Realistic/Nature/ subcategory?

Thank you very much

Our tropical photography site http://www.hawaiianphotos.net/ was moved into the
http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Visual_Arts/Photography/Exhibits/Realistic/Nature/
category queue by senox on 9/22/2003 but I notice this category does not have a "Category Editor" listed on the bottom of the page.

How long has this category been without an editor?
How many submissions are currently in queue in this category?
Since this category is without editorial oversight can an editor above http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Visual_Arts/Photography/Exhibits/Realistic/Nature/ evaluate our submission?
Or could a kind and unburdened editall or meta editor render assistance in this editorless category?

I believe we would be a nice addition to the DMOZ directory for the following reasons

Commenting only on the Regional - you need a physical presence and address in Hawaii to get listed in Regional. As a general guide, most sites that go in Shopping cannot go in Regional unless they sell both online and from a physical store.

How long has this category been without an editor?

That is not information we generally share with the public. Regardless, it is unimportant because any editor in the tree above a given category can edit there, and there are some 200+ editalls and meta editors with the rights to edit in any part of the directory they deem necessary.

How many submissions are currently in queue in this category?

Senox noted in an earlier reply that there are several hundred.

Since this category is without editorial oversight can an editor above http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Visual_Arts/Photography/Exhibits/Realistic/Nature/ evaluate our submission?
That is most likedly what will happen, when said editor chooses to edit in that category. No one tells editors where and when to edit. We are all volunteers and within the categories where we have permission to edit, we edit where and when we choose. We do, however, have a somewhat brutal quota of one edit every three months or we expire. :)

Or could a kind and unburdened editall or meta editor render assistance in this editorless category?

One could. Although I know of no unburdened editalls or meta editors.

:arrow_right: I read your elegant plea as to why your site makes good sense for ODP. Unfortunately, your words were wasted for a couple of reasons:

1. No site is ever reviewed because of a posting here. The first time that happened we would be facing chaos as word got out that there was a way to shortcut the review process.

2. Editors review sites based on their content, not based on well-written appeals posted here. In all likelihood, the reviewing editor will never see what you wrote.

3. So much of what you wrote is very important to your company, but totally irrelevant to what we consider when reviewing a site for a possible listing. For ODP, content is king! Page rank is irrelevant. Awards are irrelevant. Links are irelevant (except the presence of quality links may merit a word or two in a description), bookmarks and visitors are also irrelevant. We look at content. If your site has good, unique content, and we can find it, then an editor will give that favorable consideration in deciding whether or not to list a page. The rest doesn't matter.

An additional thought [and should not be taken as a put down of your site] - as mentioned above - editors have a different set of guidelines when adding sites. They are not rated, [with the exception that a really usefull site in a category might get a star], so within a category there is an even playing field. So IBM and Fred the software developer might end up side by side.

Many of the sites I have added:
  • Have never been submitted to ODP.
  • Have never been rated anywhere.
  • Have no visitor counter.
  • Do not rate well in search engines.
  • Are virtually unknown.
  • Probably do not appear in anyones bookmarks [/list:u]
But I take a pleasure in adding them, because now their content becomes more available to web browsers
