Hi There

There doesn't seem to be a link to suggest a site for /News . I need to submit Interfax News on behalf of a client. I've thought long and hard about which category this site should go into.

Interfax provide news services for Russia, China and CIS as well as major global news stories as they break. It is an established news provider. I noticed that New York Times is in this category (which by definition is proncipally concerned with New York/US) as well Al Jazeera - which is principally concerned with news from the arab world. It would therefore seem appropriate to place Interfax in this category too. Moreover we are a competitor in the news market with Reuters.

We are currently integrating this site into Google news - with Google's full cooperation. The site has recently been redesigned at great expense and we are taking the oportunity to add additional services including developing RSS XML feeds. So at some point we should like that listing included as well.

Can you give me some advice on how to proceed given that there is no link to add a URL.

Many thanks in advance

There is no link to add a URL at that level because every third webmaster on the planet would try and submit there.

Submit to the single best subcategory (breaking news?) and in the description ask the editor to consider you for the top-level category.

Thanks for the swift response.

I'll do that.

/News/Services/
Interfax

I have submitted this site to the above category. Would it be possible to pass a link to this post on to the editor for News/Services. There was no place to put the information in the submission form.
Please don't think I'm trying to get express inclusion - I'd just like the editor to have full information at the time the submission is dealt with.

My concern is that it takes 4 months to get listed and another 4 months to get put into the /news category. As I'm sure you can tell this is an established news agency and should have been submitted years ago.

Many thanks again

Not really because we have absolutely no idea who will process your listing suggestion or when. In any event, editors make decisions on the basis of the website itself which presumably contains all relevent information.

If you really need to add a note to the editor in your listing suggestion, resubmit (just the once) and add a note to the end of the proposed description [like this example].

Interfax News

I submitted this site amendment and requested moving the link to http://dmoz.org/News/ as per this post http://resource-zone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=35655. As I mentioned before Interfax is the main news site for Russian news but it also covers world news - like Aljazeera for the arab world.

Firstly we requested the title be changed to Interfax News - but this didn't occur - although the description was updated.

Any help would be appreciated.

Why are you opening new threads in violation of the forum rules?

Please return to your other thread that concerns this website.

Apologies I thought that as this site had now been submitted that this was now the correct category.

You may delete this thread as I have posted it in the original thread.

On the basis of looking at the page, valid titles under ODP title guidelines. (See here: http://dmoz.org/guidelines/describing.html#titles )

Would be:

Interfax Information Service (See footer - appears to be company name)
Interfax Information Services (Top left - appears to be company name)
Interfax (Top left - appears to be company name)

Interfax News would not be a title used as it does not appear to be either the name of the site or the name of the business.

So the update request was processed quite correctly per our guidelines.

HTH

Andy

EDIT: Added the charter for News/Services says:

"News Services provide news headlines, stories, photos, and breaking news on a regular schedule, frequently updated throughout the day, for distribution to subscribers of those services. Wire services and news syndication services are typical examples of the news services collected here."

Your business would appear to fit into this category, it does not seem to be misplaced.

Thanks Andy for the swift response.

Changes are afoot at Interfax in terms of how it delivers content. When this has happened would it be ok to resubmit if it does meet the criteria for the root News category?

I'd suggest not doing so. I don't know what the criteria for the root News category are - but looking at the sites listed there they appear to be major players that you see in hotel rooms across the world. There also appear to be some big news aggregators (Google/Yahoo).

Basically unless you've got huge global presence, I doubt the site would be listed there. e.g. Do you see Interfax on your hotel room TV when you are abroad like you do CNN, NBC and the like?

Al Jazeera is pretty well known internationally in recent years. But I have to confess that I hadn't heard of Interfax until your post here today (I live in the UK).

The exceptions in the English directory appears to be USA based news services like CBS/ABC which don't have much international presence (at least by the hotel rooms measure - though you see them in Hollywood films) - but then the English part of the directory is US centric to an extent because it is in English language - so USA wide network presence is probably 'big enough'.

Also you should consider that our criteria tend to change over time as standards get higher. So sites listed there currently, might not make the grade if they were fresh submitted now. However there is a degree of inertia - so already listed sites are less likely to be re-evaluated against a higher bar.

Another very important consideration would be content quality and quantity. Does the Interfax site match the other sites in the root News category for that? (I don't know.. but we normally say that in order to justify a listing, you should have the same standard (or better) of content as the best sites listed already in a category - not the worst ones.)

In a nutshell - sites don't get added in top level categories as a result of submissions, they get added because an experienced News editor uses their own real world experience and lists them there.

Cheers,

Andy

NB:
Please note though I do not edit in News really, so take any of this with a pinch of salt. Your best guideline is normally found by examining the existing sites and reading the category charter (description) :)
