Hello,

I have attempted several times over the past few months to get my site listed. The URL I have been trying to list on is at:
http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Pets/Fish_and_Aquaria/Marine/Chats_and_Forums/

My site is at: http://www.marineaquariumadvice.com

You can contact me at TerryB1@comcast.net

My description is as follows:

Resource for marine aquarists. Library of original articles, live chat, photo gallery, discussion forums, links and more.

Can you tell me if I am doing something wrong, or how I can get listed? I beleive that my Website meets the criteria for a listing. If not, please tell me what I need to change to get listed. My last submission was more than a month ago.

Thank you for your help,
Terry Bartelme

Your submission of January 4th is waiting for review. Any older submissions to the same category have been overwritten by the new one.

Estimates are cheap.

But: what would you do if I said "three days"? Then what would you do differently if I said "three years"? And, for that matter, both are normal. What would you do if I said one and it turned out to be the other?

Just assume I said "four years", and make the best use of your time in the meantime. And if it's sooner, you won't have been harmed; if later, not disappointed.

Is it advisable to resubmit to the directory since it has been more than a month since my last submission? Would resubmitting now just put me father back on the list of sites waiting to be reviewed?

Thanks,
Terry Bartelme

No.
Maybe.

There's no imposed order on the list of sites, so it's always possible a resubmittal WON'T set you back on the nonexistant order. But it never (what, never?) yes, never (what, never?) well, hardly ever helps.

We'll tell you if it ever helps.

When I was checking my AWstats I noticed that someone entered my site using DMOZ for the first time. Does this mean that someone is actually reviewing my site or am I just getting my hopes up? Does this only mean that someone click on my link in this thread? I am still not listed in the Open Directory Project or DMOZ.

Thanks for your assitance,
Terry Bartelme

If you see the site listed in the next few days then you know it has been reviewed and accepted. If not there are a dozen reasons why someone might access the site without reviewing it and you can find out more anytime after 4 August.

Oneeye,

Thanks for your quick reply. Do I understand you correctly that I cannot find our more for 5 more months (after August 4th)?

Thanks,

If the site is listed you can find out when the public servers update - could be now, could be a week, it depends how fast the hamsters, who power the servers, are running on their wheel. Keep looking every so often. But status reports for moves and rejections and no changes are only given at 6 month intervals or we would be deluged with requests on a daily basis.

My site finally go listed! Unfortunately, for some reason, it was listed in the wrong catergory. I chose to place it in : "Recreation: Pets: Fish and Aquaria: Marine: Chats and Forums" where it belongs. It was placed at:
http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Pets/Fish_and_Aquaria/Chats_and_Forums/

Shouldn't my site be placed in a more specific place such as the one I submitted for at?:
Recreation: Pets: Fish and Aquaria: Marine: Chats and Forums

How can this be changed or can I have my site in two categories?

Thanks,
Terry Bartelme

You're welcome to submit an "update URL" request. The editor will consider it. It is unusual to hear a request for a more specific category, but not prima facie unreasonable.

Note, however, that we expect webmasters to always place their site wrong, and are pleasantly surprised by the fairly rare exceptions. For instance, your own site would not have been received a second listing at Shopping/Vehicles/Autos/Appraisers, regardless of how badly you wanted it there or how many updates you requested. (I am not making this up -- what were you thinking!)

Even though my sites looks like it is listed in the above category, I cannot find it using a search for any of my keywords. Several of my keywords are in the top ten on various search engines including Google. Why doesn't my site show up when I check my keyword rankings for the Open Directory Project?

Thanks for your help,

Terry, the ODP is a directory, not a search engine. And even though it does provide a search, it is basically there to help editors when reviewing sites. It is currently way behind. Most searches even when they work state that it was last updated December 17, 2004. Do not concern yourself with the dmoz search. The site is listed, and almost no one uses the search to find sites. They just drill down in the categories to find what they are looking for. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for the quick reply. When I use a program to see if I am in the Open Directory Project it tells me that I am not listed. When I look in my category I can see that my site is there, hence the confusion.
