Please let me know the status of <http://www.patioworld.net>, submitted to:

1. <http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Patio/Furniture/>
2.<http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi?where=Regional/North_America/United_States/California/Business_and_Economy/Shopping>

I have been trying to get my site listed since the fall of 2004.

I apologize for my prior multiple submissions, but I only just today found this forum.

Hopefully, I am on the right track now. Can you tell me if, in fact, I am?

Also, as a point of protocol, the Patioworld site I listed has 8 stores in different California cities.

Would it be appropriate to place the listing specifically under each of those eight cities ina ddition to the state listing above?

Thank you.

Check out the number of listings Walmart.com has. That should answer that question conclusively.

Thanks for the reply, but I can't say the answer is all that conclusive.

Of the 63 returns on Walmart, only a handful actually reference www.walmart.com, and most of those are distinct arms of the behemoth - DVD rentals, corporate HQ, etc.

FROM THE FAQ: "There is generally one category which best fits any site"

That would seem to be the policy. As a moderator though, I defer to your experience in these matters.

I'm just an old linklayer, happy if I can get my site listed at all.

Straight answer is no, the listing would go in the geographical category that covers all the cities, not in each individual city. There are a rare few times where a site can be listed in a couple or three cities but never eight. Walmart should only have one listing for its stores - other arms might have individual listings though. They might also have separate listings in non-US countries, I don't know. They trade as Asda in the UK and that will be listed separately I'm sure.

Provide clickable links and someone might give you a status report on the submission you have in now.

Thank you Lord Windy. Makes sense to me.

So, now I just leave my recent submissions on the shopping block, and hope some editor takes pity.

I'm sorry I didn't get back here to reply to Ed.

The site I submitted still isn't listed... it's been 8 months now.

And I just noticed these site status reports are being discountinued.

Is there anyplace to turn for guidance once that happens?

I didn't see any option in the general post.

I am commited to trying to get the site listed.

Not sure what Oneeye meant by a clickable link?

<A HREF="http://www.patioworld.net">PATIOWORLD</a>

Doesn't seem to work that way.

Submitted to:
1. http://www.dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Patio/Furniture/
2. http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/California/Business_and_Economy/Shopping

Thanks, if anybody reads this.

The reason your links didn't work was that you put them in tags - you just need to paste in the URL.

patioworld.net is waiting for review in the Regional category you mentioned, as well as in http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Patio . A number of duplicate submissions have been removed from subcategories of Shopping/Home_and_Garden.

Don't suggest your site again! The risk of all copies being removed by mistake grows with every extra category the site is suggested to. Besides, you agreed to the suggestion policies ( http://dmoz.org/add.html ) when you suggested the site, and it states "Please only submit a URL to the Open Directory once. Again, multiple submissions of the same or related sites may result in the exclusion and/or deletion of those and all affiliated sites." Submission to a category in the Regional tree in addition to the other submission is one of the very few exceptions that exist to this rule.

One reason that we decided to stop giving status information was that so many people believed that posting here was a way to "get their sites listed" or to make the review happen faster. It isn't. There is no way to "get your site listed". You suggest the site for review, but the responsibility of listing or denying a listing for a site rests completely on the editor. Once you have suggested your site, there is nothing else you can do; the best thing to do is forget about the ODP and market your site in other places, since we're not a marketing tool anyway.

We'll keep the rest of the forum open for discussions about the ODP, but no, we're not going to offer any alternative venue for finding out the status of a suggested site.

The submittal policy is, as always, the only source for real guidance. The status report is only information, and doesn't affect what you should do.

There is no "get listed" option, and there is no way to try. So it's guaranteed that ANYTHING you do with THAT in mind WILL be spam. It's that simple.

You "suggest" a site, which tells interested editors they might want to look at it and consider it for a listing. That's all you can do. (And you've done that.)

Now if you want to "get" or "try" -- then there are MANY other websites that have those options -- from the FFA link farms that emphasize the "get" aspect, to the Yahoo/Looksmart folk that emphasize the "try" aspect. Here we only have a "help the editor find sites" option.
