Hey dmoz Editors, I have been trying to get my site http://www.tejasthumpcycles.com listed with dmoz, I first submitted it a couple of months ago originally, and then again a couple of weeks ago. I have read just about everything reguarding the rules about being accepted, and I believe I have met all the condititions. Have I done Something wrong?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Yes, please could you include a clickable link to the category, as requested in the forum guidelines? Thanks.

The good news is that your site suggestion of 13 Oct 2003 was received (if you submitted earlier, the submissions were overwritten), and your site is awaiting review in that category, so there's no need to resubmit. The bad news is that a couple hundred other sites are waiting there too, so this could take a while.

Due to the backlog in this category, in order to save yourself some time and effort, I'd recommend waiting at least 3 months before requesting a status update in this thread.

Hey Editors, Just a quick question, I read that other posters have been able to tell if there are any editors assigned in a catagory. How are they doing this, I would like to look and see?

Just Curious!!

The simple answer is that they can't. Not really, anyway.

What they (or you) can do is to look at the bottom of the ODP category page and see if any editor names appear there (in a small box with "Category editors: "). Those editors are the "listed editors" for that category. In your case, the category has no listed editors.

However, as you should have seen in the replies to many of those posts, every ODP category has many editors -- anyone with privileges higher on the branch of the tree (in your case, categories such as http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Vehicles , or just http://dmoz.org/Shopping/ ) can edit in that category. And any of the more than 200 editall and meta editors can edit there. It is impossible to tell when a category will be edited. Some categories with listed editors have huge backlogs. Some categories with no listed editors have no backlog, and are closely watched by an editor who is not listed there. And since you can't do anything about the backlog or waiting time anyhow, it's not worth worrying about.

Yes - but it's a waste of time doing it - the presence of an editor is no guideline to anything. If you find an editor for a category, they may not be actively editing, and if you find no editor listed, there may an editor working day and night in that category adding listings. I edit in about 150 categories - but I'm only listed in 23 of them. First, some editors can and do edit anywhere. Second, any editor can edit all categories below their category.

Thanks for the quick responses!!

Thanks to ALL of the odp editors!! It must be a tough job, for no pay, and the only real reward, is that you are truly trying to make the web a better, more organized, sensible place for all of us!!

This forum is excellent, I should have read more of it to begin with!!

Well, we're not letting you off that easily....

If, like the rest of us, you have too much on your plate, and not enough plate, then why not join the fun and apply to become an ODP editor.

Find an area of interest (perhaps your hometown or a nearby community) and check to see that the category with ODP is faily small (we start you off in the shallow end of the pool so that you have a good chance of success, we'll let you in the deep end of the pool when you have enough experience). Find three additional sites that would be appropraite for that category (be sure and read the submission guidelines and look at the titles and descriptions of sites already there), fill out your application and then cross your fingers and toes.

We have editors who do as little as one edit a month, and others who have forsaken all signs of having a life in favor of ODP editing. You should probably target something in between.
