Ok, please bear with me,

I have been reading these forums on and off all day today and have come to the conclusion that there is no need for some of them (forum categories that is).

Before all the editors gang up on me and tell me I'm not following guidelines, just listen to why I think this...

The most visited category in this forum is "Site Submission Status". I have already mentioned in a previous post that this should be automatic, for example:

http://dmoz.org/sitestatus.cgi?url=www.whatever.com

This could then tell the webmaster the date it was submitted, the category, if it has been looked at, if it has been approved, rejected and more importantly it could conditionally return information on what the webmaster should do, i.e "Wait", "Submit later" etc..

Anyway, back to my reason for this... As I mentioned, I have been surfing this forum for a while now and have taken a look at alot of the threads in "Site Submission Status". Almost every single one goes something like this:

Webmaster: Dear editors, please tell me the status of my site www.site.com
Editor: you must submit the link to the category of your URL and also the date your submitted (because we have no means of finding that out).
Webmaster: Oh, sorry about that, my site was listed here: http://dmoz.org/thiscategory/thissubcategory/thissubsubcategory about 3 months ago
Editor: OK, well check back after 6 months and submit here ;)
*6 months pass*
Webmaster: Hi, Im back.. my site is still not listed, can you tell me when it will be listed?
Editor: Sorry, it's not possible to say how long it will take.

In conclusion then... is there any point to this? There are tonnes of threads out there that basically follow the same trend as above, one classic case that I have just found is:
http://resource-zone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=3773&page=2&pp=15

I think something needs to be done about this as I have a few websites listed at Dmoz and it really does improve your site traffic and Google PageRank, many webmasters out there are failing to compete with, in some cases, pretty poor websites that have managed to get listed on Dmoz (they probably belong to editors no doubt).

I'm looking forward to a) getting this post deleted or b) getting banned or c) getting a lecture by 5 or 6 editors about Dmoz being voluntary.

Thanks for your time.

How about d) this is a suggestion that has been made many, many times before and it isn't going to happen anytime in the foreseeable future. In fact, if this site were to stop doing status checks, it would likely be replaced by absolutely nothing.

You know, I was going to commend you for having written a well-intentioned, polite post but you just had to get a dig in at the editors, didn't you.

yeah, motsa. She's an administrator and a meta.

However, she just told you that we are not going that route. Don't think it hasn't been discussed before. If you read some of the other threads that have posted the same idea before, you might get an inkling why that's the case.

It's not that no one thought of it.
