I have posted my portal in a appropriate category some 6-8 months back and still waiting for it to get listed.....
Actually to clarify, what you have done is suggested to the editors in that area that your site may be one to consider. Only editors can publish a site to a category. I wanted to clarify that common misconception first and foremost. 6-8 months is not a relatively long time for a suggestion to await a review. The FAQ that laigh pointed you too explains it pretty well. Depending on the category, quality of the public submissions, editor (volunteer) interest in the area and other factors, its quite possible for a suggestion to wait considerably longer before an editor chooses to review it. Not every suggestion will be included, and no we don't send feedback on suggestions.

after reading about the person who is waiting for last 4 years to resubmit...i m in very much doubt...
Waiting for what? The only service that dmoz offers to webmasters and site owners, is that the directory allows free suggestions of websites for consideration. Once someone has suggested a URL, there is nothing to wait for. Eventually someone will review the suggestion, if the editor feels the site benefits the directory it will be given a compliant title/description and published in the correct category. If the editor feels the site doesn't comply with the guidelines for inclusion and doesn't benefit the directory it will discarded.
