If ODP does not list my site, will search engines ever list it?

I submitted my site six weeks ago and assume it was rejected. Have I shot myself in the foot with the search engines by submitting my site to ODP? I'm quoting from ODP's "About us":

The Open Directory powers the core directory services for the Web's largest and most popular search engines and portals, including Netscape Search, AOL Search, Google, Lycos, HotBot, DirectHit, and hundreds of others.

I would not be so concerned, but from everything I've read ODP is a one strike and you're out operation.

A lack of listing in ODP will not hinder listings in search engines. I have a site I created two weeks ago, which is in all the major search engines already, and is not in ODP. An ODP listing is only a small part of marketing, and it's importance is overrated.

Why? Did it violate any of our guidelines? Did you ask for status?
Never assume anything. :2cents:

Keep going! Getting the search engines to list you can take time but can be done in many ways.

Probably the easiest is to be linked to any site that is in Google.

Good luck!

If the search engines cared about their users (instead of making a buck by any means possible), they would put a lot more weight on ODP listings than they do. Sadly, they undervalue ODP inclusion as a sign of worthiness.

Plenty of sites get by in search engines without being in the directory, including those that use black hat methods.

Do you know of a good tutorial on submitting to search engines?
Sorry if OT

Don't worry!

We have some page one search results in Yahoo, MSN, Google, Lycos and others while still waiting for an ODP listing.

No need to submit to any search engine. They will find you, just as long as other sites already link to you.

Submit only to quality directories: those that cover your local area, and those that cover your specific topic.

Long before my site was listed on DMOZ, my site was the second result on MSN and the 20th result on Yahoo when searching for the relevant keyword. However, it wasn't and still isn't anywhere to be found in Google results.

Not a DMOZ issue. That is a google issue. Page rank and where sites appear with regards to others on search engines are not our concern. We are building a directory and we do not build it with page ranks in mind.

You might want to go ask google, MSN and the others.

I dunno about anyone else, but I wasn't suggesting that it was a DMOZ issue. In fact, I was trying to suggest that search engines independently decide the value of of a DMOZ listing.

GrrrlRomeo, then please understand our confusion - you have posted this question in a forum called "General ODP Issues", so we assumed that you assumed that it was an ODP issue.

I would suggest that search engines do individually evaluate how much importance (if any) they put on a listing in the ODP. Some say it is not important at all, others say it is more important.
