Improper grammar of reviewer itself!

Hi there,

I just applied for becoming an editor at http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/India/Assam/Society_and_Culture/Personal_Pages

since I am local to Assam and thought I would be eligible for being an Editor here.

I was told to suggest 2 to 3 urls for this category and I suggested my Dad's .. which I had mention is already in the Directory.

Okay, whatever the reason for rejection, at least the reviewer should have had proper grammar since this is one of the clauses stated for rejection.. but here's what I got for a reply :

If only want to add your URL in the directory, please uses the
corresponding link of the public page. Thanks.

Just shows the quality of editors you got? with improper grammar and rejection causes?

Not all meta editors are native speakers of English. Those of us whose English isn't really up to par generally do not write descriptions in the English parts of the directory; however, their English is good enough to explain to applicants why their applications were rejected, right?

However I feel being the one of the largest directories in the world, such things shouldn't really happen. I am really disappointed here.. the reviewer was editing an 'English' part of the directory (or do you consider this category not to be English?). Well if you say they generally do not edit, thats okay!

When I say English, I mean of course English-language. (I think it's 56 years or so since Assam was British... ) Everything not under dmoz.org/World/ is English. The text about grammar is part of the formula letter. The specific reason why you were rejected is to be found in the Reviewer Comments. I hope this helps you understand better.

The editing that jophan is referring to is is the editing of listings in the categories (i.e. that someone not comfortable editing in that language wouldn't ordinarily edit there). One doesn't have to be perfectly fluent in a language in order to be able to determine that an application is incomplete. For example, I don't write French well enough to edit in that category but I can tell when a French application is incomplete or inappropriate.

The top part of the standard rejection letter contains a number of possible reasons for rejection, not necessarily all applying to your application. The reviewer's comments tell you everything you need to know about why you were rejected -- suggesting only one site, your father's (which you admit is already listed in the directory), is not going to get you accepted as an editor. You need to provide at least 2, but better yet 3, suggested URLs that are appropriate for but aren't already listed in the section you want to edit.

No. The reviewer was reviewing an English application for a new editor. That does not mean that the person who reviewed the application edits in that area. The people who review the applications are not necessarily the editors of that section. Meta editors review applications and we can edit anywhere in the director but we tend to edit in the areas where we know the language. That doesn't mean that we can't review applications for languages that we know only a little bit. I know a little bit of French. I wouldn't edit in any of the French language categories, but I could review an application for a French editor. If there is a problem with their application other than spelling or grammar I can see that and can respond to it. If everything on the application looks good, but I'm not sure that the spelling or grammar is ok I can ask one of the French meta editors to take a look at it for me.
