Two years ago our site was posted to http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Online_Communities/Social_Networking/

It was not listed after one year and was re-posted, again it was not listed after one year and has now been re-posted. The site matches the category. I would like to inquire if there is a reason of it not being listed or is the editor not active for this category? We also posted a report of inquiry (c2b0960335da194bca42173382e2af81) over a year ago for why it was not added, have not received a reply to the report either.

We don't discuss individual websites here but I have checked out your abuse report of 2008-08-09. It was resolved the same day as 'not abuse'.

You might have misunderstood our objectives and how we operate here. ODP is a volunteer organisation building a directory as a hobby. Editors edit where they wish, when they wish and as much as they wish within the constraints of their permissions. We have no schedules or systems to force people to do work that they don't volunteer to do. ODP is not primarily a free listing service for website owners and it does not attempt to process their listing suggestions within the time scales desired by them.

Some volunteer will process your listing suggestion in time but we can't predict who or when that might be. Elapsed times can range from a few days to a few years. There is no need to re-suggest your website and doing so could be counter-productive because a later suggestion overwrites any earlier one.

Also please note that our submission guidelines require that you suggest your website just once to the one best category. Anything more than that is unwelcome because it causes even more work for our hard pressed volunteers, thus contributing to lengthening response times for everybody.

That category probably should be removed altogether. It looks to me like a relic of the days when editors would list basically any site somewhere in the Computer top-level category because, well, not just social-networking websites but ALL websites are ALWAYS on computers, right?

Probably, sites that are primarily "social" in nature should all go in Society, leaving only sites that communicate technical/computer information in Computers.

Obviously, people who are interested enough in computers to volunteer to edit Computer categories are often NOT the same people as the people who volunteer to edit, say, expatriate-morganians-in-the-elbonian-capital-city networking sites. And so, obviously, any rational person would expect very long delays for websites that BELONGED "somewhere" in Society but were mis-submitted to Computers: waiting for a computer-savvy editor to do enough research on the site AND the society taxonomy to figure out where the site OUGHT to go.

What to do? Suggest the site, ONLY ONCE MORE ONLY ONLY, to the most appropriate regional, or ethnicity, or denomination, or political, or whatever, category, corresponding to the kind of social network that the site was created to support.

Suppose the site doesn't have a pre-existing social network? No problem, wait until it has created a social network of its own, then suggest it to the category most closely representing the current social network.

Suppose the site doesn't have a social network already? No problem, it's not listable; and we've already got a thousand other empty SN sites to look through and not list anyway. Prepare for a long long wait before the site is rejected on its merits.

I agree with you hutcheson. We also initially looked to add the suggestion into the society directory as this is where many directories, e.g. Yahoo Directory, list social networks.

Regarding re-suggesting - it wouldn't be accurate to target an international social network on basis of ethnicity, political views, etc. and there is currently no category which applies to social networks in the society directory, closest being http://www.dmoz.org/Society/Relationships/
