intro page vs 'company overview' page - content

We are in the process of re-designing and revamping our website. The proposed structure has a main page with just an image and pulldowns for various sub-pages. One of the sub-pages has mainly the content that is on the current home page. My question is whether such a tactic is smart or not, because as I understand, it may not make sense to get http://www.mycompany.com/overview.html registered as the company site.

Or does it make sense (and is ok) to do that? Unfortunately, I don't have a real URL to post here because the website is still in dev stage.

The root of the domain is what will get listed if and when the site is listed in the ODP. Not a question of "tactics".

so then, it would be better to have the text on the root of the domain rather than in the 'company overview' section?

Not necessarily. You have to design your site to best suit the needs of your enterprise. We can't tell you how to do that.

All we are saying is that when/if your site gets listed, it will be listed at the top level of your domain. Editors constantly run into sites with introductory page and are more than able to click through them to find the real content (or lack of same) on a website.

Do what is best in terms of design for you and your customers/visitors. If you want to influence the possibility of an ODP listing, generate lots and lots of unique content within the website.

Providing you don't put a five minute flash introduction on the front page, which not only slows the editor down, it's not great for the customers. :D
