Is anything planned to replace status updates?

Hi
I have studied, understood and largely agreed with the concept of DMOZ, however this doesn't do much to relieve the frustration of not knowing if an application has been ditched of is still in the pipe.
DMOZ now feeds many directories.
Is there anything planned to replace status updates which disappeared as I submitted an application. Would it be possible for potential editors / no editorial volunteers to spend an initial period conducting status checks, I’m sure that many of us are sympathetic enough not to check our own status and not look any further !
