I apologize if I am asking a question that has already been asked, but is there a way of obtaining feedback of any kind as to why a site might have been rejected?
Knowing why a site was rejected might help improve a site and thereby help it get listed.

No, but you can check for yourself whether or not your site is listable here.

If your site is listable and you've suggested it to the one most appropriate category, the usual reason why it's not listed is that no volunteer has got around to looking at it yet.
