Is it possible to change a site's category?

I have a client ( totaljobs.com ) who are listed in http://dmoz.org/Business/Agriculture_and_Forestry/Employment/Job_Search section. I am told that they had a legal requirement to get their listing changed, and somehow it was moved in the process. I think the category most suited to the site (a general, not agriculture and forestry specific job site) is dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Business_and_Economy/Employment/Job_Search/

I am told that both my former colleague and totaljobs themselves have tried several times to have this changed, but without success... Do you have any advice on how to get this change made?

Many Thanks,
steve

Use the update URL link at the top of the cat where the site is currently listed.

Sites are entitled to both a topical and a regional listing, by the way.

Great - I didn't realise this... I thought that it was only one submission per site. - this is from the ODP submit a site http://dmoz.org/add.html page... "Identify the single best category for your site. The Open Directory has an enormous array of subjects to choose from. You should submit a site to the single most relevant category." - so I presumed that you were only allowed one link from the ODP, and thus was trying to get it into the most suitable category?

I will try the update URL link though - thanks!

No, you are allowed both - but you have to have a location given on your site, like a business address, to get the Regional listing.

If your site is *only* relevant to Regional - e.g. a bookstore that doesn't sell books online, only to real customers coming through the door - then you probably wouldn't get a topical listing. You could get a topical listing though if your site included informative content that was relevant to everyone worldwide, e.g. biographies of different authors.

Not true.

Johncaius, what is your editor login so I can send you a private message?

I am still going to go and use the Update URL link in the category as suggested before - let me know if this is not right!

thanks,

Well, if you feel that the site is valid to be listed in its current category then leave it there. If you feel in addition that it can be listed in the Regional portion of the directory then the best thing to do is to submit it fresh to the Regional category using the Add URL link.

Submitting an update URL request is most appropriate if you want the site to be moved from the Topical category to the Regional category, but not if you want to ask for a second listing, leaving the first one in place.

If your site is only relevant to its Regional location, e.g. local services, local information only, then ask for it to be moved. If it is relevant to Topical, e.g. general information relevant to a wide audience, internet-based or international services and delivery, then leave it in Topical.

I'm an ODP editor and new to the Resource Zone--which is great!

kctipton, I was just curious why you'd want to send a private message to johncaius about this, rather than post a clarification. I am now unsure of the exact policy regarding this from reading the thread, I only know he is not correct. I will now go and attempt to retrieve the info from the Editor guidelines, and I'm sure you had a good reason for not posting publicly, but in my mind it would have been a better solution just to state the policy so that it can stand as a resource for others with the same question.

thanks,

An address of some sort is necessary but not always sufficient for a sites to get a regional listing. Some sites exist only in cyberspace. Where on the planet Earth would you list such a site?

As a follow up - we try to keep editor training in the internal ODP forums or to personal email/mentorship and focus on submitter realted issues here. There wasn't any great mystery or faux pax that kctipton was trying to deal with offline, and it was also fine to ask for clarification on the question.

Just type it in the 'Reason for change' field. The editor who reviews the update request will take it from there.

It helps if you can give the full category path in the form Category/Subcategory/Subsubcategory , (instead of Category: Subcategory: Subsubcategory) as then the editor can just copy and paste it in if he/she feels the move is justified.
