Is Re-Submiting a big mistake?

B

Yesterday I asked for the status of ONE of my submitions.
I was told I had just submitted the day before which was to soon to be asking. Actually I had submitted some time before and since then submitted my request again.
My biggest mistake has been not realy reading the guidelines. Another is not keeping a record of the date and in which exact catagory I submitted to.

Question 1- Does re-submiting just override a previous request which inturn delays my acceptance into dmoz?

I started out submiting sections of my site:
the postcard section
the christmas section
and so on...
Reading the rules it seems like you say only one link aloud yet when I look at the christmas section
http://dmoz.org/Society/Holidays/Christmas/
I see a lot of links to sub-sections like
mysite.com/christmas/
mysite.com/level/level/xmas.html

I think my christmas section is unique
and offers something different to the cat.
http://www.buckysdollarstore.com/xmas/

Question 2) Should I ASSUME it will be rejected because it is a sub section and just try to submit my main URL?

http://www.buckysdollarstore.com/
This is where I do need your help. I don't know which cat best describes my site. I have many different subjects.
Arts and crafts, postcards, a list of 16,000 babynames, casino links, christmas and more.
How do I choose out of the 400k cats you offer?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Re 1) - If you want a quick review: Yes, it is. Anyway I wonder why people actually assume resubmission would do anything good. Most times the new submission will simply overrule the old one. Sometimes submissions are just added (what will lead to an editor having more work deleting lots of dupes before actually reviewing the last one - which would be something he does not like to do...)

Re 2) Do not submit deeplinks. See our guidelines for more explanations on them.

Re 3) - Your Site: I cant judge since I cant access it using Opera6.05 - It wont let me click anything above the baby names. If you have a bridge and mortar shop (looks a bit like it=) submit to your hometown.

With Mozilla 1.1 most of the links are inoperative. The ones that work are the last three, 'AAA cash', 'welcome wagon', and 'hit the bricks'.

This doesn't affect the site's suitability for listing, but it does mean that editors using Opera and Mozilla can't edit it, so you'll have to wait 'til an editor with Internet Explorer goes through the queue.

I guess a quote from your guidelines gave me the idea to re-submit.

If a site you submitted has not been listed after three weeks, you may submit it again or you may send an e-mail to an editor of the category for which the site was submitted.

Re 2) Do not submit deeplinks. See our guidelines for more explanations on them.
Another quote from your guidelines

General Rule: In the vast majority of categories and branches, deeplinking is the exception rather than the rule. Deeplinks should offer content that is unique and extremely useful to a particular category. There are no strict rules regarding the type of site that should or should not be deeplinked. Providing deeplinks, in a uniform way, to sites that offer extremely useful and unique content can add value to the directory in a few cases (e.g. categories with very limited content, and where the meat of the available web content is typically buried within larger sites). However, editors should be very judicious when adding deeplinks of a particular URL. If you are uncertain about adding deeplinks, ask an experienced editor, such as a meta or an editall, for advice or guidance. Ultimately, all deeplinking decisions are subject to staff approval.

If you go to this cat
http://dmoz.org/Society/Holidays/Christmas/
out the the first 25 links on this page I found these URL's

http://www.didyouknow.cd/xmas/xmas.htm
http://christmas.allinfo-about.com/
http://www.rebazone.com/billy/holidays/christmas/index3.htm
http://candycanechristmas.50megs.com/
http://www.feyarteoffaeries.hispeed.com/krysplace/holiday/christmas/
http://library.catholic.org/family/family121.txt
http://washingtonmo.com/christmas/
http://www.thesuretysource.com/christmas/
http://www.personality-creations.com/xmas/index.html
http://www.phillyburbs.com/mongol/
http://www.sgeg-usa.com/christmasland/index.html

that is almost 50 percent deeplinks.
How can you say No DeepLinks aloud?
When I see this many deeplinks on a page why shouldn't I assume my site is worthy of a deeplink also?

Re 3) - Your Site: I cant judge since I cant access it using Opera6.05 - It wont let me click anything above the baby names.

My page was validated at w3.org "Valid HTML 4.01"

I can not find any mention of mozila or opera in the guidelines.

What does this mean?
Do most editors use this method of checking sites?
Does this delay many submitions?
Is the problem that you can not read css (style sheets)?

If you have a bridge and mortar shop (looks a bit like it=) submit to your hometown.

My site has little to do with my brick and mortar store. About 3 pages out of a couple a hundred. I guess you assume that from my URL since you can't see my site.

I came to this forum for help.
Now I have to wonder if everything I learned from w3.org is useless imformation.

Thanks for trying to view my site to help me pick the
one best cat to be in.

Since you are the most important directory to be in
I will keep trying.

An editor can use whatever browser they like. dfy is just saying because your site only appears to work in IE an editor using IE will have to review it and not everyone uses IE. For example I personally use Safari, a Mac browser.

Replying to the main issues here though..

I don't think your main site is listable anywhere really. Except maybe here: http://dmoz.org/Society/People/Personal_Homepages/B/

I'm going to disagree with windharp and say that yes, you should submit each section of your site to their specific categories: Online free gambling, greeting cards, etc.

Most of the time unreviewed are sorted by title or URL, not date, so submitting a new request doesn't change anything. We generally don't do submissions in any particular order.

Technically, that's not quite true. Sure, your main page validated but the subsequent frameset is not nor are the frameset's component pages. You can't just validate the index page and assume that the rest are fine.

My guess would be that it is the invalid FRAMESET coding that is causing the site to unviewable in anything but IE. You might also want to check datwayR2.jpg -- it is showing up as a plain white image rather than the right arrow I think you mean it to be.

>Sometimes submissions are just added (what will lead to an editor having more work deleting lots of dupes before actually reviewing the last one - which would be something he does not like to do...)

And, if the editor has to delete a bunch of duplicate submissions before he does review your site, likely he is not gonna be pleased with the webmaster when he does. Irritating the editor isn't the best of strategy to maximize odds of your site getting listed. On the flip side, submitting with a title and description that are 100% spot-on guidelines compliant may improve your odds. I definitely don't get a warm, fuzzy feeling about a submission when the title and description are just random strings of keywords.

I want to say thank you all for your help.
I believe I have all my css validating now.
It will take me awhile to totally do away with frames.
I think it will be quite a task to build a website that pleases everyone and every browser but I am working on it.

So I'll get back to work,
and Thanks again for you help,
Bucky
