Just another pesky question...

Since submitting our doctor's website, The Houston Chiropractor on 4/05/2005 to Houston: Health: Alternative: Chiropractic and not being successful getting listed (yet), I was wondering if it would help if I volunteered to edit that category.

With only 9 chiropractic websites added for the entire city of Houston, Texas ...seems someone desperately needs assistance.

For that matter, with respect to any category editor applications, are more editors needed at ODP?

I've looked over the Open Directory Editing Guidelines and Site Selection Criteria ...all of which I have personally followed in my web development career anyway. As I work from my home office, I'd probably have at least 4 - 5 hours free time per week to scrutinize submissions ...that is, if editors are even needed at ODP.

Would I be wasting my time, or are qualified editors in short supply?

Otherwise, any suggestions for when, or when NOT to submit Dr. Robinson's website again, or any other remarks of substance would be appreciated.

Thank you for your support ...and goodnight.

More good editors cannot be a bad thing, so the only question is "would i be a good editor".

If you want to get your site listed and nothing else, the answer is probably no. If you want to mke the directory a better place the answer could well be yes :D

I guess i am waffling, you should read the Editor application guidelines and the Edting guidelines and see if you think youd enjoy it (it is a hobby after all)

I forgot your other question, if your site was submitted then it is in the pile awaiting review, the best choice is to 'submit and forget', another submittal in that catagory will overwrite your first one and send it to the bottom of the pile.

Roger that Sp00fer ...it'd also be sort of a drag to edit one little 'ole regional ...that is, sitting around weeks, months, years waiting for a submission to come along ...especially with me being a workaholic.

I wonder if it's difficult (for an editor) to expand his/her responsibilities farther up the category tree.

You don't have to do that. Editors should look for new sites to add, not wait for suggestions. Site suggestions are just one way of getting new sites to improve the categories. Especially for a workaholic, finding lots of good new sites to add should be an easy task. :)

We had an article ybout that in the 2002 newsletter - see http://dmoz.org/newsletter/2002Summer/second-category.html

Hey thanks windharp, excellent article in the newsletter.

I'm starting to get a feel for the ODP editing community ...perhaps I'll more seriously consider applying.

As a Web dev ...and being online half of every day, I encounter lots of really good resources that people could truly benefit from ...especially in the medical arena.

cheers

Just a little note for your notepad.

Note: Knowledge of the medical arena will only be beneficial if you first prove a good interpretation of the editing guidelines. Proper titles, guidelines compliant descriptions, sites that fit the category, etc. Good Luck!

hmmm, actually I'm not interested in "proving" anything to anyone ...too egotistical. I endeavor to be methodical, precise and fair ...in everything I do.

That same philosophy would extend into any editorial tasks @ ODP.

I do understand and appreciate your tips though. Thanks.

Just one final little tip: if you do decide to apply for that Houston category, make sure that the sites you suggest are actually in Houston proper and not in one of the suburbs (which likely have their own Locality categories).
