Every category can be edited by plenty of people. Even if there's no-one listed at the bottom of your category, anyone higher up the tree can edit there. So a Widgets editor can edit in Widgets/Blue. Also any editor designated as editall or meta can edit anywhere in the directory.
If there's no-one listed in your category and you'd be interested in contributing to the directory in this area (not just listing your own site) then do consider applying.
I was informed that the category of gift baskets is too large for me to start with (even though it seems there may not be enough or anyone for this particular category). But it stands to reason that I would be best suited for this category since I have been in the business for over 7 years. Well, I thought anyway...
Don't worry - it's not a criticism of your lack of knowledge - the metas that review applications will only grant a small category to start with, until you've proven that you know how things work in the world of ODP editing (there is a LOT to absorb when you become an editor...)
I'd advise you to find a much smaller category which you think you can tend, and then try again. Think of it like the training wheels before you get the bike you really want to ride
I assume the category you're inquiring about is Shopping/Gifts/Gift_Baskets/ , which has just over 800 listings (there's 694 on the public page, which has not been updated since January due to our ongoing server upgrades and other issues, but apparently there are in fact active editors in that tree). Why don't you instead consider applying for something like Business/Consumer_Goods_and_Services/Gifts/Gift_Baskets/ , which has 20-something listings and room for growth?
Thanks, I'll consider doing that! Just one question, though, it was a while back when I applied to be an editor and I was e-mailed concerning this, so would I need to reapply, or how does that work?
