listing two official sites in specific scout relat

Relevant Category for this inquiry is:
http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Scouting/Organizations/Boy_Scouts_of_America/Districts/Southern_Region/

Specific Questions are:

Are late Dec. or early Jan. submitted sites awaiting review. The specific urls are:

http://www.lastfrontiercouncil.org/Districts/eagle.htm
http://www.lastfrontiercouncil.org/Districts/big tepee.htm

Second question:

Can official district sites be listed to replace
unofficial sites are already listed when the unofficial
sites are extremely out of date.
The two unofficial district sites are:

Title: Big Tepee - Last Frontier Council
Current URL: http://www.bsa.net/ok/lastfrontier/bigtp/

Title: Eagle - Last Frontier Council
Current URL: http://www.flash.net/~memoryx/eagles/

Reason to request this change: Current urls are
pointing to outdated unofficial sites. My desire on behlaf of the local council is to have title and description for
these council districts point to Official district sites
(just as other LFC district listings point to the official district sites)

I do not control the unofficial sites. I seek
to have the official sites listed because the two unofficial sites are not kept current and are
several years out of date on district information.
If these sites were going to be maintained, regularly, the ifnormation would not date back into the late 1990's.

The new official district site URL for Big Tepee:
http://www.lastfrontiercouncil.org/Districts/big tepee.htm

The new official district site URL for Eagle:
http://www.lastfrontiercouncil.org/Districts/eagle.htm

Current Title and description are adequately accurate as written on both districts.

Prior Steps I have taken:
Submitted official district sites back in Dec or jan; I didn't follow up as well as I should. I have no recall on when the unofficial urls were placed in dmoz, and I concede I do not recall if I chose originally to not submit the official sites for Big Tepee and Eagle initially due to unofficial listings being in place.

I did submit a feedback report and an update url request for both several days back and sent an email to the listed editor as well. I haven't heard anything in response, but as everyone who edits at ODP is a volunteer, I am not totally surprised on that point.

Alternative request: If the url changes can't be made due to the unofficial sites not being under the control of the council, could the official sites please still be listed in this category, and labeled as the official district sites, or is that not possible while the unofficial sites still exist?

Again, I have no control over the unofficial sites and can't take them offline. I'm just trying to make it easier
for Scout families from these two council districts to find the official district web pages and the most current information in their districts instead of information which predates the beginning of this century.

Re: listing two official sites in specific scout r

1. When trying to go to http://www.lastfrontiercouncil.org/Districts/eagle.htm, I get an error 403. However http://www.flash.net/~memoryx/eagles/ is listed in the mentioned category.

2. http://www.lastfrontiercouncil.org/Districts/big tepee.htm also doesn't work (neither with the blank between "big" and "tepee" nor with an underline). http://www.bsa.net/ok/lastfrontier/bigtp/ is listed in the same category though.

3. Whether URLs will be changed is up to the editor in charge. But no editor will change from a working to a non-working URL.

Robert,

Thank you for your reply.

I don't understand why the url's did not work when you looked at them. The only thing that comes to mind is that the web site url's are case specific, e.g., it must be typed as Districts and not as districts.

On the specific home page name for each district, it is also case specific, e.g., /big tepee.htm and not
/Big Tepee.htm and it's a space not a - or an underscore between the two words. I realize I probably need to find a way to change that. I've been focused on improving content and not the mechanics since I became involved with the council and district sites and so I haven't gotten that far yet.

I do know though that these url's for the official site are functional:

Big Tepee
http://www.lastfrontiercouncil.org/Districts/big tepee.htm
comes up as
http://www.lastfrontiercouncil.org/Districts/big%20tepee.htm
in my browser address line. it also works without the www at the front end.

Eagle
http://www.lastfrontiercouncil.org/Districts/eagle.htm
works in my browser window as well, and it too also works without the www at the front end.

I am aware the other two url's (for the very outdated and unofficial sites at Big Tepee and Eagle) are currently in the Districts: Southern Region category. That is of no help to end users in the two districts though as those unofficial sites are horridly outdated in their content.

That's why I'm trying to get the current and official sites listed instead of, or in addition to, the unofficial sites. Neither council professional staff nor I have any access or control to the unofficial sites, and we can not update those sites. For whatever reason, those sites have not been updated in a number of years and much of the information they display predates January 2000.

It sounds though from the end comment that I must simply wait for the category editor to check his email or get around to reviewing the feed back that was previously sent.

Please know that I was not trying to have non-working urls plugged into ODP. That would be of benefit to nobody.
I'm sorry you were unable to reach the official district sites, and I'm hoping you might try again. If not however, once again, I do appreciate the efforts which were made, and I regret I was not clearer in the first instance.

Respectfully,

Re: listing two official sites in specific scout r

One problem here is that Internet Explorer tries to 'fix' broken urls - that's why the big tepee is coming up as big%20tepee. A lot of other browsers do not correct faulty names - so the URL is invalid.

Not directed specifically at you, but *please* do not name pages or sub directories with spaces in the names - use big-tepee , big_tepee , bigtepee, or big%20teepee as these will be understood by all browsers.

They both work for me in IE6, but this is probably the most diverse place for browsers - Editors use whatever they want, and that ranges through all the browsers available, including those that run on Macs and UNIX machines.

Re: listing two official sites in specific scout r

Thanks for that tip. It is being logged so I won't forget the advice.

Site structures were in place when I came on the scene, and content improvement has been my primary concern so far, but your explanation makes a lot of sense to implement.

I'm mostly IE on browsing myself, and from what I can tell, a tad over 96% of all human visitors for the various sites are also IE. That fix-it capability would apply to the vast majority, but that doesn't mean I should not look into it further to improve things for the remaining 3+% who come to the site.

Thanks again for the tip.
