In area "Computers: Internet: Web Design and Development: Hosting: F"
The editor "seagirl1" seems to have disappeared.

I submitted my website months ago (like an idiot, I forgot to check date though - but about 8 month ago).
Since then, I have also applied to become an editor to help speed-up submissions and editing... I have also tried to email seagirl a few month ago with no reply.

The amount of entries in the section remains at 177... same as it was when I applied to be listed :(

Can anyone here check her activity on dmoz.org as I think she has gone offline and left that section with no editor :(

No need. The parent cat (Hosting) has 3 listed editors. They can edit in all the subcats of Hosting.

All editors are volunteers and can often edit in many categories.

As ODP is just a hobby to most editors they fit the time they spend editing in amongst their real life. Therefore "Any idea why nothing has been touched in about 8 months then" could be explained by perhaps the editor may be moving house, doing the gardening, new job, new baby or simply... "not enough time these days". The list is endless but at the end of the day real life is first and ODP is somewhere on the list below most of the day to day chores.

Eitherway some editors can only spare a few minutes a week and other are glued to the screen. They edit at their own pace and their work is much appreciated by all.

You're thinking in terms of a robotic assembly line -- one review in every category every 17.32 days. Real editing is nothing at all like that. It's generally "I haven't visited Defenestrated Widgets in months. I'll go review all the interesting sites this afternoon..." followed by another random interval of inactivity.

I would like to add a quote excerpted from our posting Guidelines:

...In particular, the following topics may not be discussed. ...
Complaints about specific people working or volunteering their time at ODP.

Thanks for pointing out that quote but I dont really think its relevant, is it

I at no point complained about seagirl1, I just informed you that she may not be around anymore & asked if anyone knew why her section hadn't been touched in 8 months if others have editorial rights too.
Maybe the site engine is being rewritten or anything but I'll never know if I don’t ask ;)

The general consensus seems to be "No, we have no idea - it could be anything" which is fine :)

There’s no need to get defensive

Anyway... Since I requested to help as an editor in that category and have had no response. Is it still safe to apply for other categories or would that be classified as bad practice?

If you applied as an editor you should have got a confirmation email. If you did not get that email more than likely your application did not go through. We have a forum here for checking the status of editorial applications. You should go there for these kinds of questions. Have a great day.

Thank you for the additional information, thehelper. I will check that forum when I get back from work, but will need to go right now

If you already have an application pending, yes, applying for another category would be bad practice until/unless the first one is dealt with.
