Multiple questions about reinstatement

  • From other posts on this forum I gather that successful reinstatements take very little time, one or two days. Is that only true of reinstatements due to inactivity, or do reinstatements of resigned editors generally take the same time to process?
  • If one specifies an incorrect old email address in the reinstatement form (in the "Reason for reinstatement" text box), how does that affect the decision?
  • Does an email get sent to the applicant in case of denial?
  • If denied, does it make sense to reapply for reinstatement again in the near future? Is the answer different for resigned and removed editors?
  • What will happen if the password provided in the reinstatement form does not match the login name?
  • Lastly, a purely theoretical question for your amusement: if a person goes into witness protection, can she or he apply for a new editor name despite having been editor before? :)

I have one more question to ask:

Do the categories that the reinstatement applicant used to edit have any effect on which senior editor/meta review his or her application? In particular, if the applicant used to edit a World category will the application be necessarily reviewed by a person fluent in the language of that category?

Please feel free to refer me to a relevant FAQ or another guiding document on any of these questions. I have read the ones I could find, but I am afraid I might have overlooked something

Reinstatement request reviews can take anywhere from seconds to weeks depending on the nature of the departure but generally take a day or two.

It doesn't affect the decision but it *can* cause small delays due to technical issues.
If denied, does it make sense to reapply for reinstatement again in the near future? Is the answer different for resigned and removed editors?
No, it doesn't make sense to reapply for reinstatement if you've been denied but then that never stopped anyone before. ;-) No, the answer isn't different.
What will happen if the password provided in the reinstatement form does not match the login name?
Uh, then it won't log you in. Was there a hidden question there?
Lastly, a purely theoretical question for your amusement: if a person goes into witness protection, can she or he apply for a new editor name despite having been editor before?
I'd say that they have more things on their minds than editing here. ;-)

In general, not usually except perhaps, as you noted, for World categories.

Thank you very much for replying, motsa :)

Just to clarify,
What will happen if the password provided in the reinstatement form does not match the login name?
Uh, then it won't log you in. Was there a hidden question there?
Am I correct to assume that if after applying I am sent to a page saying something to the extent of "your application will be reviewed" it means the password I supplied is correct?

The reason I am asking is because in my understanding it can be a security risk when login/password combinations are confirmed as incorrect immediately after they are supplied. Some websites avoid doing that for that reason.

The reinstatement form has nothing to do with your password.

  • Thanks for answering almost all of my questions! :) What about the one left over (quoted above)? I am particularly interested in that one because I have applied for reinstatement and haven't received any emails back yet :( After reading the stories on this forum I can't help but feel pessimistic about it. When I used to edit, I barely got any submissions (actually, I am not sure I ever got a single one) - the vast majority of the sites were found by me. Now it seems that ODP is swamped by tons of submissions and people apply for editorship to put in their websites and delete competing websites. Correspondingly, I am afraid the senior editors are prone to be suspicious of applicants :( It seems that ODP is in this situation largely because Google, which uses it, became the most popular search engine. Thus, I hope, since I was editing only World/Russian subcategories, I will not be subjected to same suspicions - Google seems to be not a factor for Russian-language net audience. Perhaps one of the meta editors could tell me if such hopes are justified ;)

And please don't forget the first question too :)
    Thanks!

I can't remember if an e-mail goes out when you're denied reinstatement, but I know that one does go out when you are reinstated. So normally I would say welcome back and tell you to check your inbox, but in this case you're probably not going to get it because of the e-mail issue. So just go to http://editors.dmoz.org/editors/ and log in using your editorname and password. You will also want to change your e-mail address in your profile once you log on. And before you do anything else, read the Guidelines which might have changed since you were gone {moz}
