Hello!

I have a website that I would qualify as relevant mainly of one category, but also proposing content that should belong to others.
Errr not clear, isn't it?

I focus on MEMS and Microtechnology.
I've also made sections about solid mechanics theory, electrostatics, etc.
These sections are not "MEMS". So, I have a few questions:

Currently, I'm registered for the MEMS directory of the site (the URL I've submitted contains the directory name).

- Would it be considered as abuse to submit some of the other directories to other categories?
- Should I request a changing in the URL to link to my homepage rather than the MEMS section directory?
- Will you all forgive me for my poor english?!

Thanks by advance!

Up!

What is the best??

http://domain.name.ext/
in a more general category

that I don't like much, because a site could be considered very very general for having talked about 2 very precise but different subjects...

or

http://domain.name.ext/section1/
in the section 1 related category
+
http://domain.name.ext/section2/
in the section 2 related category
+...

If the sections are different enough, should it be not cleverer to have multiple subdirectories in multiple sections rather than pushing people making one site per section?

Thanks for your advices to a not professionnal at all webmaster...

As our submission guidelines request, please suggest your website to the one best category. If we think there's a better one, we'll move it to there. Multiple listings are at editorial discretion only; please don't ask for them.

We don't push either way in that respect. So long as all the bits of the site are reachable from one URL, and that is the URL they submit, then they don't incur the penalties described in the Submittal Policies. ("separate sites per section" would be "related sites", read the policy to see how they are treated.)

<added>well, we don't push. But of course we have preferences. If a site is spread out over several domains, all clearly linked together, then I try to treat it like one site all on one domain. If a site is spread out over several domains, NOT clearly linked together (but actually from the same source), AND the various domains are separately submitted: well, then the fair assumption is that the person not only knew they were violating the submittal policies, but intended to deceive the editor also. And there's one webmaster that just ran an overdraft on his lifetime quota of sympathy.

Thanks for your answers!

Things are a bite more clear now.

My objective is not to be listed in every possible sections, of course, and in fact, not even several ones, because I understand that a directory is supposed to propose a classified list of websites and not a sitemap for my one. ;)

Considering your explanations, I think that my current listing is the proper one, so I won't ask any other update that the current one (better description), and I let the concerned editor decide for the relevancy of my request.

This is not a commercial website, I've not even put advertisements on it. Be confident that I have no particular interest in spamming dmoz with links!

multiple categories

I have a question for those of you that have experience in editing and categorizing site submissions.

I have a business that produces roof cleaning chemicals. We have a portion of the site that is dedicated to educating homeowners on roof cleaning options, why our products should be used, and how to find our Applicators.

We also have a section for Property Managers since we routinely work with whole communities.

We also have a section for business opportunities for contractors throughout the country that would like to add our roof cleaning products and process to the services.

What would be the most appropriate category?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Pick the most appropriate category in Business for the products that you manufacture -- everything else you describe is in support of selling those products.

I suggest you navigate down the Business category until you find the best match for your product-line (you are the best judge of what that is :) ). But please check the Business description - depending on the scale of your operation, we may prefer you to suggest it to the appropriate Business category in Regional. If you operate only in one country or area, then check the Business category for that country or area. If you are not too sure which, please chose only one of the two categories - if it is not right, editors will be used to seeing misplaced suggestions of that type and will move it.

All the items you mention are ways in which you promote your business and may only become relevant if you have to decide sub-categories - for example if a blue-widget category has separate sub-cats for wholesaler and manufacturer whilst someone who did both would submit to the main blue-widget category. If you think about it, what all the people you are trying to reach will be looking in common will be 'product-line'.

If you have a bricks and mortar, physical address (which I think you do), you may also suggest your site to the most appropriate single location in Regional. This is where the building is located - not the area which you hope to serve.

regards
