Hi,

I have a question regarding multiple submissions. You said in the guidelines that if a site owner submits a site more than once, they may be excluded from ODP.

My question is: what do you consider a multiple submission? Let's say XY has a site called www.samplesite.com
There are multiple celebrities on this site. So, the site owner submitted the following links in the appropriate categories, like this:
www.samplesite.com/lindsaylohan in the Lindsay Lohan category
www.samplesite.com/shuqi in the Shu Qi category
www.samplesite.com/jenniferlopez in teh jennifer lopez category

Is this considered multiple submission and can this site owner be excluded because of this?

I am looking forward to your reply.Thank, Lili

Yes. You are not allowed to suggest deeplinks of a site.
If you only suggest 3 times I don't think that this will get you banned. But with an excessive number of suggestions it might get banned. There is no fixed rule on the number of suggestions which will get you banned.

Rule: suggest once to the best category
Exception: if the site is in different languages it may be suggested to all those languages
Exception: if a site is both of regional and of thematical relevance it may be listed twice

We'd rather not tell spammers exactly how much they can get away with.

It's better just to say that the guidelines do not threaten people who follow them, and we try to make sure that people will never be worse off for following them, or better off for not following them.

So: absolutely, site owners can be excluded for not following the guidelines, and have been excluded for that reason.

On the other hand, the guidelines are there to make the project work better, not to punish spammers (and so they say nothing at all about brimstone or boiling oil.)

Roughly speaking, in practice I've noticed that people who are concerned about having over-submitted need not have been, and people who aren't concerned -- well, needed to have been.

Thanks for your reply. This is exactly what I thought also. I am really trying to help a friend who has a web site like that...and I found MANY sites on Dmoz that are doing exactly that. Big sites, they are listed under many many different celebrities.

I was just wondering HOW they can get away with it?

Thanks,
Lili

If you were to take really big comprehensive/definitive sites in media and entertainment, say imdb.com and bbc.co.uk, neither will have submitted any deeplinks at all. Editors will have selected the deeplinks because they feel they added value to the specific category. Generally these pages are so comprehensive that they outstrip entire independent sites on the same subject. But that's the key - you submit the main URL, an editor decides whether content within the site is sufficiently valuable to list independently. You don't submit the deeplink.

multiple submission

Thanks, that is what I was thinking about. I do believe that it does add value, those are great sites. And thanks for letting me know that that exists (that those sites are not "exeptions").

I think I'll let my friend know this and he can submit his site. And we trust that the editor will see the value in it too;-)

This answers a question I had as well. Thanks for the info.

If you were trying to submit www.imdb.com but you can't submit deeplinks (say in movies/titles/) then you'd want to submit it in just "movies" right? But if there's no "submit url" option at the higher level how do you submit it? Is it bad form to send a message to an editor?

I don't think it to be bad form, just don't expect a reply. Editors very rarely will respond to a feedback PM regarding a site submission. You should choose the best related sub-cat and submit there. You could always note a reason with the submission that you feel it better suited in the higher category and why. In the end, the reviewing editor will make the final decision on placement and make sure it is moved there.

Hope that helps.

Thanks.
