Hello

I have been trying to submit my website at regular intervals for nearly a year.

The site is [URL removed] a site offering car rental in the Algarve.

The site has many visitors from all over Europe, but I cannot get it listed in DMOZ. I have been trying to submit the site to this catgory [category removed].

Please could anybody tell me if this category has an editor, and if so what is stopping my site from appearing in the directory.

Thanks

I removed the URL and category from your post because per the TOS we do not discuss specific sites or editors here.

It sounds like you have submitted your site more than once or twice. Please stop immediately. You must have missed the part of the Site Suggestion Instructions that says how many times you're allowed to suggest your site then, despite that fact that each time you suggest you have to state that you've read and agree to follow those instructions. Suggesting a site multiple times can have negative effects on the site and other site, since oversubmitting can cause extra work for editors. If you have been submitting to multiple categories, you have definitely caused more work for editors and slowed things down for everyone, probably including yourself.

You may have misunderstood the purpose of ODP and the role of editors. We are a group of volunteers interested in building a directory. We aren't a listing service. Suggesting a site only puts it into a pool which is available to an editor when they decide to work on a category. It is only one source of new sites, and frequently is the poorest source. We don't know when your site will be reviewed. It can take several years to be reviewed. And before you ask, you will not receive an email when your site is reviewed or listed.

I don't know if that category has a listed editor, but it really doesn't make any difference. All editors higher up in that category tree have the ability to edit in that category when they wish, and there are also about 200 editors who can edit anywhere in the directory.

Hello Gloria

Thanks for your reply.

I have only resubmitted a site after lengthy periods after assuming that the site has been rejected by an editor.

The site was also submitted to a single category, and I am not sure if the reason that it has not been included is due to the category being incorrect, the quality of the site, etc.

Is it possible to obtain the contact details of an editor for a particular category to get some feedback?

I a site is rejected suggesting it again won't make it listable. Almost certain it will be rejected again.
This ofcourse is only a general statement and does not provide any information about your site.

Sites do not get rejected fro being suggested to the wrong category. Editors will just move it to the right category for review.

No.
And if you would have contact details you still would not get the requested feedback. What would happen if all those thousends of people who suggest a site would send emails to the editors. That is why we advised editors not to reply to people asking about theis website or the status of their suggestion.

Thanks for response.

I understand that it would be time consuming to provide feedback on site submission failures, but surely this would prevent re-submissions from people who don't know if there sites have been rejected or not.

Although the DMOZ policy is to encourage people not to re-submit sites, after a period of time re-submissions may be for a valid reason such as the website owner has changed the content of their site and now believes it to be suitable for inclusion in the directory.

Also please could you tell me if a site is rejected once by an editor, does this prevent it from being included in the future?

Frankly, I doubt it. In any event, re-suggesting a website isn't going to get it listed any faster and could have quite the opposite effect.

No it doesn't.

If a site is re-submitted to the same category I believe it overwrites the previous submission entry is this correct?

If so this wouldn't be wasting an editors time, but may cause the site to drop to the back of the queue.

Indeed :). That's why we ask that folks don't do it unless there have been significant changes to the website.

However, it's not a queue, it's a pool. Editors can process the suggestions in any order they wish. I'm lazy. If I have limited time to work in a category, I'll pick the ones that have made some attempt to write guidelines compliant titles and description - and I can spot a keyword stuffed promotional description at 100 paces with both hands behind my back.
