When a visitor to DMOZ searches and "No Open Directory Project results found" the visitor is directed to:

"Try your search on: Altavista, Lycos, A9, MSN, AOL, Teoma, Clusty, Wisenut, Gigablast, Yahoo, Google"

How can a new search engine be considered to be added to this list?

I work for a new search engine that I think could really help DMOZ visitors who are not able to find what they are looking for. I will abide by the rules of this forum and not post our URL. I will say we are getting a lot of great press, blog posts, and most importantly people who really like their search experience with us.

Is their an editor or meta reading this post who could please contact me? Either post or contact me by private message. I hope I'm not being egotistical here, but we really are a legitimate new search site with Alexa numbers that are actually a little higher than two of the sites listed above.

Thanks,
Steve

As you might have noticed these are all well known and well established search engines.

If you have a new search engine you can suggest it to http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Search_Engines/ or one of the categories linked from there.

Alexa numbers are not relevant for us. And IMHO should not be for anyone else as they are only based on visits form people who have their taskbar installed, which are not the average people on the interenet.

I guess I was not clear....

I do know how to submit my site to be listed into the DMOZ directory and I have done that.

My question was not about being listed in the directory, but how my company's search engine can be resource for those visiting the directory who can't find what they are looking for in the directory.

I know that all of the search engines listed are established search engines, but they all were new search sites once. I've been online since 1994 and remember the day that both Yahoo! and Google launched. I also know that Alexa is a flawed measurment tool. I only mentioned Alexa ranking to illustrate we are not some small experiment, we do have visitors.

I checked "your" search engine. As I was not impressed, I'm not going to suggest ODP staff to add it to the list.

Fair enough. But you are an Internet "Super User" who knows how to search. Could you reccommend our site as resource your Mom or Dad could use? Someone who finds it hard to use search engines to find what they are looking for.

Yes, and they managed to become known and used by many people.
Many more have tried the same and didn't succeed.
So for a new SE. Become as well known and used as them and we might think about putting it on that list.

No, I could not. I might include it if I was trying to warn someone about things to look out for.

Back to the question. There is simply no procedure for "applying" to be included in the list; it is based to recommendations from editors finding them useful. That tends to be mutually exclusive with search engine representatives having an urge to spread the word.

Just as a general comment, skremer, and bein search engine ignorant, (though I use several), the word about a really exceptional tool usually takes off on wings of it's own doesn't it?

I think talking about your SE in open forums is a great way to get the word around, or even offering the forum itself a free tryout, some of them have thousands of members, but, this forum doesn't allow urls to be posted, so, it's kind of a lost cause in here, though I realize you're probably trying to get the word to ODP staff, :) .

SE stuff usually gives me a headache, so I don't pay too much attention to it, I just use the ones that give me exceptional results, ;) .
