I submitted our site 3 weeks ago and naively (until I found about the resource-zone) thought we would be added in two weeks. I notice the category I applied to has not been updated since Fri. 20th July 2007. This does not sound promising but I don't really understand it. Can anyone explain please.

Sorry, explain what?
Your thought that a site would be listed in 2 weeks. It ain't so. It could take from a few days to several years.
That a category has not been updated for almost 1 year. With some 600.000 categories and arond 6000 active editors I think there will be many categories that aren't updated during last year. But each of those could be edited tomorrow, or maybe they will have to wait another year. We realy don't know.

I can only advise you to read our FAQ and stop worrying about when your site will be listed. It is not worth the worry.

Apparently someone did some work in that category on that date. You'd have to ask that person why they worked there then.

But does it matter why? They worked, if their work was a help, we can all be grateful (that is, all of us who are interested in finding other good websites on that subject), and that's the end of it.

OK, officer, up against the wall and assume the position! (Sorry, I've always want to say that). :D

The ODP is a volunteer organization where editors are free to contribute whenever they want and (withing bounds) wherever they want. There is much, much more work to do than the editors could possibly do -- even if they were working full time.

Before I turned in my editor cap, there were about a million plus sites awaiting review -- and reviweing sites is not the major focus of most editors.

Editors are strange creatures. Their fascination is with building the directory, developing categories and structure, and independently finding sites to list. I'm inolved with a similar activity, in a similar capacity, and a much, much smaller editing team there added more than 16,000 sites last month -- and there is no submission pool.

As a person suggesting a site, you have done your part. If you are also the site owner/webmaster your best bet now is to go off and find other ways to promote your site. Do the necessary SEO, build content, find other directories and search engines. An ODP link is nice, but not critical -- and I say this with firsthand knowledge because one of my sites is consistently ranked in the top three for the best keywords, and it is definitely not part of ODP.

Good luck with your site - focus on the things that are important, and don't let and ODP fixation distract you from what you really need to be doing.
