No, that is not what jim said.
There are about 200 people who can edit allover the directory.
The latest number I have seen for the total active editors is around 5125. This number does not tell us or you anything about how active (number of websites listed) or where (in which category) these editors are actove.

But i just wanted to write a n article for the people help and probably convert it into a free e-book and help both the people.

I have a suggestion. YOU write about what YOU know: what you know well, based on your own experience.

Leave writing about the Open Directory to people who already know the details about it. It's not as if there was no good information already available (that you weren't able to find it, which speaks volumes for your own research skills.) As someone mentioned, there are 200 people who know the directory well enough that they are trusted to edit anywhere they think they can. A number of editors answer questions or write articles here: other editors publish articles on their own sites or help in other forums. And all of that information is completely free.

If you want to help people understand the directory, send them to someone who DOES understand the directory: that's what web links are for. In fact, that's what the directory is all about.

Why the criteria of becoming an editor is so strict?

Why the criteria of becoming an editor is so strict?

They aren't strict. It's just that we don't accept applicants who:
  • are less than honest
  • are clearly self-serving
  • don't understand the scope of the category
  • aren't fluent at reading and writing in the language of the category
