I have been watching several catagories for over 6 months and noticed not one new site has been added to the directory even though at least 2 have more than enough editors. A friend applied to be an editor in both catagories and dmoz said they were over represented and to pick another.

Why is this? If the editors don't have time to add even 2 new sites in 6 months shouldnt you get more editors??

Actually, the email reply says that the category is over represented or too large for a new editor.

Because no editor was inspired enough to add any sites. There are categories that have not been touched in mor ethan three years, so six months is a relatively short period of time.

This is a privately owned and run forum and the owners/administrators have the right to edit or delete any posting for any reason they deep appropriate.

Look up and read the previous posting, then read the FAQ item you were given a reference to.

1) Very probably because the editors have been spending their time in other categories. As stated in the FAQ we can not predict when a suggested site will be reviewed. This can somewhere between several days and several years.

2) If a posting is edited it will be shown in the posting (who and when)

There are about 600,000 ODP categories and, less than 3000 sites added daily. Do the math.

I did read the FAQ's and lots of other info as well. I have been reading for months before I decided to post.

The FAQ's still dont give us an idea as to time frames. We don't know what goes on behind the scenes so the only way to find out is to ask.

Thank you to those who took the time to answer.

There are no answers to that one and the FAQs should make that clear and say why that is the case. Some sites are listed within 24 hours of being suggested. Others may have been waiting for years. There is no pattern to it that anyone has ever been able to determine

What goes on behind the scenes is just thousands of volunteers, editing when they have the time and inclination, on their own schedules and priorities.

The total adds up to a lot of work, and it's easy enough to look and see what sites GOT added, and when. It's impossible to guess ahead of time what sites WILL GET added, and when.

So we try to keep people who are interested in the ODP focused on the reality -- what happened, and avoiding speculation about which possibilities WILL happen.

The basic misunderstanding is that we do not have a service. So the compliants are unjustified.

If you 'submit' a site you believe you have some rights to be listed in some undefined period of time - this period - the length of which is in your own mind has defined for you a level of tolerabilty - after whcih you have become upset. But we never promised to list any site in any period.

You can complain that your site has not been listed, but it's just as unfair that millions of sites that were never ever submitted have not been listed, probably many of them better than yours.

To quote from the FAQ

The time between submission and an editorial review ranges anywhere from two minutes to over two years. This is due to the voluntary nature of the ODP - editors volunteer their time free of charge to do what they can to build the directory. Reviewing submitted sites is only one of many tasks which editors need to perform, and for many editors, not the top priority.

Submission to the directory by users is just one source of content for the ODP - editors are encouraged to go out on their own and find sites which could be listed.

To quote from the submission guidelines

We don't accept all sites, so please don't take it personally should your site not be accepted. Our goal is to make the directory as useful as possible for our users, not to have the directory include all (or even most) of the sites that could possibly be listed or serve as a promotional tool for the entities listed.
