No way to request a new directory

O

Olivier

Hi,

Have been trying to suggest a new locational category since early February.

In your rules you mention a new category will not be considered unless there are at least three sites that can be located there.

I'd like to politely ask:
1. How does one submit sites to a non existant category?
2. I have sent eight emails politely asking for some consideration here together with providing details of four sites but have not received a reply. Perhaps my emails are going no where - I don't know.

There is no editor listed for the categories immediatly above where I am suggesting. I'm trying very hard to follow all guidelines but must admit I can't help but feel it is useless.

Can anyone advise me please.

Thank you

Jumbuck, I would suggest a somewhat different approach. If there isn't a dedicated directory for your locality, then you may jump one step further up and submit the sites in question to the higher directory. For example, if there is

/state/your_county/neighboring_town

but not

/state/your_county/your_home_town

then you may submit the sites to

/state/your_county/

This might just be the right nudge to the responsible editors to create the subdirectory for /your_county/your_home_town. As soon as there's enough content, they will to it all by themselves. You don't need to request it.

There's yet another way to get what you want. You may consider becoming an editor. For example, you could apply to the county directory or a community in your vicinity, and once you're admitted you may even get a chance to become the responsible editor for the new directory you have in mind.
How does that sound?

If your nick is anything to go by, I'm guessing you're probably talking about Australia. Is that correct? If so, Australia (as well as NA and some other countries) doesn't use the structure mentioned in the previous reply (i.e. towns aren't located right under counties/municipalities). If your locality doesn't exist, you can submit the site to the appropriate letter of the alphabar, indicating in your submission what new locality it should be in. If you're talking about a specific topical category under a locality, just submit the site to the nearest subcategory up the tree (e.g. if you were looking for a town/Business_and_Economy/Shopping category but it didn't exists, you would submit to town/Business_and_Economy if that exists or town if it doesn't). You can use the "Add URL" to add other sites that you think might belong in the category or you could always apply to be an editor yourself.

You can post specifics here if you'd like, to get more specific help.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I have applied on two occasions to become an editor as the directories that interest me indicate there were no editors assigned to them.

Unsuccessful on both occasions. Never mind.

Thank you motsa for your reply.

I purposely have not included specific information as I did not want to give the impression I was trying to achieve a result outside the guidelines. Which of course I know doesn’t happen anyway. However, at the risk of providing too much detail, the following will clarify the situation per your suggestion for more specific information. Here goes....

For starters, you must know the song "Waltsing Matlida" motsa, yes, spot on – I'm in Australia.

The polite request was for “Mission Beach” to be included in:

Top: Regional: Oceania: Australia: Queensland: Travel and Tourism: Accommodation: By Locality

At the moment DMOZ has these locations:

Airlie Beach@ (16)
Brisbane CBD@ (8)
Cairns@ (92)
Caloundra@ (10)
Gold Coast@ (4)
Noosa@ (47)
Palm Cove@ (22)
Port Douglas@ (65)
Townsville@ (8)
Whitsundays@ (4)

Mission Beach is a major regional tourism centre, located between Townsville and Cairns, five times the tourism population of Palm Cove and with significantly greater tourism infrastructure. Not of course I want to diminish Palm Cove having its own directory, on the contrary, only mentioning this to qualify my request.

The four sites I included to support my request for a “Mission Beach” category are:

1. In Destination Guides (or similar) -
Site Title : Mission Beach - The Mission Beach Community Tourism Website
Site URL : http://www.mymissionbeach.com/
Site Description : Tourism destination guide on accommodation, tours, activities, attractions and photo links directory for Mission Beach.

2. In Accommodation (or similar)-
Site Title : Mission Beach Rainforest Motel
Site URL : http://www.missionbeachrainforestmotel.com/
Site Description : Quiet four star motel accommodation in the heart of Mission Beach.

3. In Accommodation (or similar)
Site Title : Mission Beach Shores
Site URL : http://www.missionbeachshores.com/
Site Description : Fully self contained luxury bungalow accommodation set in tropical garden surrounds.

4. In Activities and Attractions (or similar) -
Site Title : Calypso Dive
Site URL : http://www.calypsodive.com/
Site Description : Great Barrier Reef scuba diving trips and PADI certified diving courses.

I hope I put forward a reasonable case in the emails I have previously sent DMOZ.

Again thanks for your interest motsa.

See? My keen investigative skills sussed you out as Australian right away. LOL

Regional: Oceania: Australia: Queensland: Travel and Tourism: Accommodation: By Locality is what is called an "@link farm". Clicking an @link in that list will take take you somewhere else under Queensland, in this case to the appropriate ../Queensland/Localities/X/locality/Travel_and_Tourism/Accommodation subcategory. All Queensland localities are listed under the appropriate letter in the ../Queensland/Localities/ alphabar. If you look under ../Queensland/Localities/M, you'll see Mission Beach and if you look deeper, you'll find Mission_Beach/Travel_and_Tourism/Accommodation (someone just needs to create the link to it from the state-wide @link farm).

Now, if the Accommodation subcategory wasn't there under Mission Beach, you would have just submitted to Travel and Tourism, and if the Travel and Tourism category didn't exists under Mission Beach, you would just submit to the main Mission Beach category.
