Hey guys.

I was recently refused an editor application (which is fine, especially as my category might have been a bit broad and not targeted enough).

BUT... the person that shows as the category editor I know is no longer active in the community relevant to the niche. The last update to his own website was Jan 2005! I've submitted at least 3 websites on different occasions over the last few years and none have yet been added.

I'd like to get some websites listed and don't really know where to start!

Any help appreciated.

Pinsanon,

We appreciate your concern. However the directory does have proceedures in place to take care of inactive editors. If he is still listed as editor of that category, then he is most likely still active regardless of wether or not he has updated his or her own site lately.

Please realize that there are tons of new submissions every day to many categories and the editors work hard to list new unique quality sites. Even if the editor of the category you submitted to is not as active as you would like, there are still editors who have access from a category higher up. I am sorry to hear that your site has not been listed yet. There is no set amount of time as to when or even if your site will get listed.

I am also happy to hear that you are trying to become involved in the directory as an editor. If you are interested in joining the team, I would suggest trying to apply for a category relatively small in size that needs development. Then you will be able to expand from there and apply to edit other categories.

It always rings alarm bells when someone talks about multiple sites "that they want to get listed" in the same category.

Nearly always, two sites that are so similar that they are both on exactly the same topic (out of 500,000 possible topics), AND are both so closely associated with the same person that he "wants to get them listed", are "related" by any conceivable definition!

So it is extremely unusual, that this would be said in a situation that does NOT represent a blatant violation of the ODP submittal policy "do NOT suggest "related" sites."[*] And, of course, if related sites are being suggested, they all become liable to the penalties mentioned in the submittal policy. (You can see how serious this is, by considering all the different kinds of abuse mentioned in the submittal policies, and comparing the penalties mentioned for each kind.)

[*]There are conceivable exceptions: for instance, if someone were creating sites for hire, for various real-world entities in the same locality or the same industry, he could be "interested" in multiple sites that were not actually "related" (because each site really represented the activity of the person who hired the site done, not the viewpoint of the website designer.)
