I already listed my site <removed URL> in the ”Real Estate Directories” Category and it does not appear yet. My content is genuine and new and my site is well designed and totally functional. It is not a realtor site (like this category forewarns)... I’m not using black hats or any bad practices.... My only conclusion is that DMOZ doesn’t have enough volunteers to cover the entire demand of site listings... I’m thinking on becoming an Editor myself... but I don’t think it’s a good idea to do this for my site nor my industry... I don’t think that would be fair...

What would be a reasonable thing to do in my situation???

I'm not sure what your situation is :).

If you want to become an editor, we can always use more so go ahead an apply.

If you want to become an editor just so as to 'get your website listed', that's not a good idea at all.

You might have misunderstood DMOZ and the process.
You can not list a website. The only thing you can do is suggest a website. Suggest means something like " I have found a website I think is interesting maybe DMOZ also thinks it is interesting enough to be listed" .
An editor will at sometime look at the suggestion and decide if it is interesting. When that will be is something nobody knows. It might be tomorrow but it also might be after several years.
It certainly depends on the number of editors but even with millions of editors there might be suggestions that will not be looked at for years. Editors only do " work" in categories they like and as much as they want.
Some subjects attract a lot of spam (Real Estate is one of them) and as a result not many editors are interested in looking at these suggestions, For the same reason the same subjects are mostly not a good place to start for new editors.
