ODP attribution and using ODP data.

Q. What are the limitations in using ODP data?

A. Any part of the ODP website is free for everyone to copy, cite and derive, in whole or in part, whatever. From the taxonomy to site titles, from site descriptions to category descriptions, from Adult to Regional, all are up for grabs. /images/icons/smile.gif

You're free to do whatever you want from it, and even earn money from it. And, according to the ODP Social Contract, ODP data will be free for everyone forever.

The Open Directory Project has just one requirement: the derivative work must contain the so called ODP attribution, which is commonly a short chunk of HTML.

<tr>
<td>
<table width="100%" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<tr align="center">
<td><font face="sans-serif, Arial, Helvetica" size="2"
color="#FFFFFF">Help build the largest human-edited
directory on the web.</font></td></tr>
<tr bgcolor="#CCCCCC" align="center">
<td><font face="sans-serif, Arial, Helvetica" size="2"> <a
href="http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/add.cgi?where=$cat">Submit
a Site</a> - <a href="http://dmoz.org/about.html"><b>Open Directory
Project</b></a> -
<a href="http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/apply.cgi?where=$cat">Become
an Editor</a> </font>
</td></tr>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
</table>

(culled from http://dmoz.org/become_an_editor .) It doesn't have to be on every page of your site, or on every page that has ODP data. It can appear once on your site's "About Us" page or on the movie's end credits. That's all we require.

Let this be an open invitation to all to use ODP data. Please see http://dmoz.org/license.html for the exact details.

A bit of a correction to what mensan says. The attribution must be on every page that ODP content is on.

Quote from http://dmoz.org/become_an_editor/

<blockquote><font class="small">In reply to:</font><hr><p>…attribution HTML must be included on all web pages that use Open Directory content, as described in the Open Directory license.<p><hr></blockquote>
