How long does it take to get a server back online? It is really unbelievable how long this is taking. I could re program the website in less than a weeks worth of work. I do not understand why it is taking so long or why there isn’t a detailed status of what is happening why there isn’t estimated date of getting back online.

There is no way any of us can know what the problem is unless one of those involved in the work comes in to let us know and that would only slow down their progress.

Any number of things could be causing the delay none of which I'm qualified to comment on, so I will simply sit and wait, as patiently as I can, for their return. ;)

I do not understand...

That's all right, no need to apologize. It is a very complex website spread over a heterogenous cluster of servers, with an extremely large database. I'm fairly sure I couldn't understand some of the issues without someone spending far more time than they could well spare, to educate me.

And I HAVE worked on extremely complex projects with very very large databases.

Because the people who are fixing it are spending their time ... fixing it. :)

Please remember we are relying on people who have other duties. When something goes wrong in a big way like this, they still need to keep the rest of AOL going. Someone is juggling resources in order to achieve the best balance they can, probably with a host of conflicting priorities.

Also remember that none of us (editors or webmasters) are paying for any of the work going on.

I'm know there is a detailed status report and an estimate date of completion - and that the information has been provided to the required parties from day one. Do you think the people who pay the bills would allow the technicians to not report this information to them?

Everyone else wants to know, but at this point, there is no reason for anyone to know but the people paying the bills.

You don't need to know what is going on in order to perform your job. I don't either - I'm still collecting information in anticipation of getting access to the editing server - but if I don't have access right now, do I need to know anything besides the fact that I don't have access? No - so I don't expect anyone to tell me. Updates are nice - but not required.

Problem is how long before people stop using ODP

If it continues to prove unreliable with the poor levels of explanation we are getting it will die a slow painful death, Alexa etc will stop using the data, blogs will start to show it as not worth going to. To state the users are not the site editors is at best naive, and at worst (lets not go there).
Without the support of people submiting and promoting the project it WILL die, I find it ammusing some of the posts from people who are really not looking at the big picture and realising just because it is free people will accept mediocrity.

You're welcome to continue to promote the ODP, however you have been. Fortunately, nearly all its user functionality is still up: search is fully functional, and the directory is almost fully browseable (I think some noncanonical links may not work.)

It's only development functions which are down (and yes, one can understand why the volunteer editors are impatient to get back to developing.)

There's no rush on site suggestions, though: the editors have plenty of development--I guess easily 3-6 months' worth--we can do without any suggestions at all.

So, obviously, the priority is to get development functionality back up and stable and BACKED up. Then, after another few weeks, I'd expect to get a sense of progress towards quality feedback functionality (abuse reports, e-mail editors, site suggestions, etc.) Because we can do perfectly well without any of those, but we know that we get useful help from them. And it's not ever a matter of "need", but it's always a matter of "the more help the better."

perception of data integrity

Won't the industry analysts stop writing about dmoz of they start to feel that the information people search on is not the most appropriate or relevant but is simply that which was already in by a certain date.
A lot of good websites are not listed in DMOZ as the editors/authors of those sites did not know in time to get the sites listed --- not they may need to wait years, even Wikipedia is pointing out to people that the data is way out of date.
How long before Google directory gets such a slating from the very same analysts that they stop using DMOZ data.

(guess you have reliased my job by now)

What "industry analysts" are you talking about? And what "industry" are they "analyzing"?

I'm afraid I don't understand what this means?
"In time" for what?
And it is not the developers/authors/designers/promoters of sites who "get" them listed anyway.

Perhaps you have not read the public documents which explain the ODP's function and how the volunteer editor community works? Once you have done that, if you feel you would like to help us build and improve the directory, then by all means apply to become an editor (when the technical problems are fixed, of course).

If you don't feel you have the time or inclination to help, that's fine, but then you cannot really cast aspersions at those of us who do. ;)
