one site is listed six separate times

I'm not really sure whether this is on-topic here, however it doesn't really seem to be on-topic over in "Abuse Reporting" either...

While browsing round the Food category, I noticed a site that is listed in http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/ for what appears to one page about food - in the sense that is has two recipes and dozens of links to other food websites.

This site has six separate listings in DMOZ (in various categories), for instance it is listed under http://dmoz.org/Health/Education/Patient_Education/ for a page which contains nothing but links (admittedly to Health-related sites).

Is there a mechanism for "dealing" with sites like this? I don't really know if this site's multiple listing is counter to any kind of guidance, but if it is, can I "report" the site somewhere?

IMHO, I'm sure the site deserves at least one listing, but six is pushing it a little:)

Thanks,

Well it depends - plenty of very large sites with rich informational content are deeplinked many times through the directory perfectly legitimately - that's obviously the exception but many sites offer valuable content in many categories that is not immediately obvious from the homepage. As an example, if you search for bbc.co.uk in the site search then you'll find 3698 listings.

I understand that certain sites deserve many deeplinks, however I'm fairly certain this site doesn't deserve as many as it has. The site seems to contain very little real content. The deeplink from http://dmoz.org/Health/Education/Patient_Education/ is to a page that appears to contain no original content at all, the http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/ deeplink to a page with two recipes... maybe having two recipes is enough for a listing in http://dmoz.org/Recreation/Food/, but I doubt it :)

I'm not saying this site is all bad - in fact, everything might be completely in order - I just think it deserves to be looked at. Should I post the URI here, or is that "frowned upon"?

I don't think you'd be breaking any rules by posting the URL. If you don't want to do it in public, send a private message to one of the moderators of this board who will look into the matter privately.

Thanks. I should say those pages were added years ago, and we almost certainly wouldn't do that now. (Where's that copy of the "rising standards for directories" song? oh yeah, the record is broken...)

Having said that, it may be time to re-review the site. (The minimum content for a listing to _stay_ listed is intentionally less than the minimum content to _get_ listed -- in order to avoid editors wasting lots of time adding and removing borderline sites.)

I know I did lots of things years ago that I wouldn't even contemplate now... :)

Is there a better way to inform editors of this kind of thing? Some people (like myself) find ourselves "rummaging around" www.dmoz.org, noticing all kinds of interesting stuff (and some odd-looking stuff, such as this), before eventually remembering we came for something specific... and all too often I can't for the life of me remember what I was originally looking for :-(

I see this quite regularly, and the search engine results are pretty amazing. eg. see ww.shoshoni.org. Has two listings, but as no other yoga retreat sites do, it therefore becomes No1 for yoga retreat, regardless it has much fewer back links than other sites and comparable content.

One of the entires is yoga retreats, the other is local business for where the retreat is, so the argument to be in both is thin, or almost EVERY site could go in two categories.

If your site is about a business, organization or other entity that serves a local community (plus has a local presence), it may be eligible to be listed in both a topical and a regional category.

(BT-FAQv2)

ODP editors don't care about backlinks, sidelinks, forwardlinks or sausage links. We don't/can't immediately see the results of a listing anyhow, what with it taking months for changes in ODP's database to make their way to various SEs.

Not really, I'm afraid, other than editor feedback. Of course, we welcome all reports of this kind :).

It's probably best to use this forum as more editors will be able to read it and take action as necessary.

RE nippi - I did a random check of fours sites in http://www.dmoz.org/Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/Yoga/Retreats_and_Workshops/

Three of the sites have a second listing in a Regional category, the fourth offered Yoga vacations, therefore it's not applicable to regional.

but as no other yoga retreat sites do
So I don't understand

and the search engine results are pretty amazing

I'm afraid that's nothing to do with ODP, ODP is a Directory not a search engine
