I noticed a few days ago that my submitted URL, www.optimizer.co.uk, appeared for the first time momentarily in the DMOZ directory, before disappearing less than an hour later.

It has not returned in about 5 days now. Is this a normal part of the process?

No, it's a very abnormal part of our server upgrade. We had to roll the public side back to an old snapshot while we changed the back end machines. It should update again some time in the next few weeks. Rest assured that (despite the spelling) your site is listed in Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/Bristol/Business_and_Economy/Internet/Web_Design_and_Marketing/.
